"The Merchant of Venice" (2004)-
a surprisingly rewatchable, rich adaptation of a fav play. the studied "decadence" (LOTS of dwarves and bare-breasted sex workers) is *almost* too much, but a steady stream of rue cuts through the sumptuousness. also- GAY.
"Can You Ever Forgive Me?"
a beguilingly sour valentine to the crusty, unfashionable people who make New York great. will always stan when a clown goes dramatic ("Eternal Sunshine," "Punch-Drunk Love"), and McCarthy's superbly bitter frump is no exception.
also a PEERLESS Anna Deveare Smith cameo
