When my classes walk in, there's often a random rock or folk or classical song blasting at full volume, and I spend the first few minutes talking about that music the universe told me I absolutely had to listen to that morning - music they'll maybe never hear again...
Well, for reasons bigger than all of us, I can't have a class right now - and my wife's sat shotgun on enough road trips to have heard all my lectures - but I do have Twitter, and I've got a song for you.
I looked for our concert version but couldn't find it...

So here's a tune built for the moment, by a man who is, for my money, one of the most underrated and expressive vocalists in rock and roll.
This month is World Music March at @LathamRidge, and while we weren't planning to do much Irish music, being that today is St. Patrick's Day, I definitely would have wanted to start class with an Irish tune.
Searching through my library of Irish music favorites, I didn't find a ton that would work with a K-6 crowd, but I did stumble across this a cappella arrangement of an Irish spin on a Scottish melody I fell in love with in college.
If anyone is particularly curious, here's the Scottish arrangement we sang in college.
After my grandmother passed, I wrote about how the universe kept sending me Ben Rector's '30,000 Feet'. For today's song I share one that this same bit of serendipity has been giving me lately - a song that was destined to end up on my classroom speakers...
And while it played, I would have talked about the way the music grows and swells, and how that musical imagery links with the lyrics that, in the end, are about having hope.
"Let your heart hold fast, for this soon shall pass..."
"Let your heart hold fast, for this soon shall pass..."
For today's song, I'm breaking the rules. This may not be the type of tune that ends up on repeat in my room all day, but sometimes inspiration strikes, and it did in this tweet from @KathleenSkeals about @Djosephcorr's video message... https://twitter.com/KathleenSkeals/status/1240407438140026881
So, enjoy today's song, everyone! And thanks for the inspiration @KathleenSkeals!
BONUS SONG: By special request of @althiell, here's the @LathamRidge School Song (ft. Mrs. White)
It's a double-play Friday! We've got a pair of covers from @lakestreetdive - which includes my favorite vocalist in music right now, Rachael Price. First up is Sly and the Family Stone's 'Everyday People.' The bass solo at the end absolutely shreds.
Next, students from @LathamRidge will recognize this one, but it's always worth listening to - both for the message, and for the interplay between Price and the trumpet at the end. Here's the Staple Singers' So great. Enjoy!
For today's song, we're taking a look at The Greatest Showman's read-through pitch. @RealHughJackman's story is an inspiring reminder that, as @NColonieMusic said, singing isn't canceled.
I love the unfiltered joy in the back half of this clip.

No deep meaning to today's song. Sometimes, you wake up & just want to hear @treyanastasio shred. Here's one of the coolest moments I've ever seen live (this isn't my video, my seats weren't that good). 2010 in Hartford, Tweezer Reprise > Tweezer Reprise:
Yesterday, after sharing some @phish in the morning, I spent my night watching an old concert they streamed. So for today's song, I'm rolling that forward and sharing a clip from a Phish show in 2013 - the ending of the best live song I've ever seen:
In our house, random days become Broadway days. Yesterday was one of those days. Here's 'Defying Gravity' from the original cast of Wicked, which I played 5 times. The only note I'll add is this:
You can have all the other singers. I'll take @idinamenzel.

Some people use music to change their mood, but I prefer to sink deeper into whatever's going on around me. So, for an overcast, rainy day, today's song of the day is this Bob Dylan cover from @Mandolin_Orange.
I love the sound of the violin in this:

Today's song of the day was chosen because when one of your 4th grade students asks you to listen to The Talking Heads - one of the best regarded rock bands among musicians - you don't say no.
Unless they're playing a very cruel joke on me, @phish is dropping a new studio album tonight, so for today's song of the day, we're looking back on my favorite track from their last album. This is 'More' from Big Boat.
For today's song of the day, I had been planning to share a track from Phish's new studio album, but instead, we're remembering Adam Schlesinger, who wrote the song 'That Thing You Do!', from one of my favorite movies of my childhood.
For today's song of the day, I'm going back to the new album @phish debuted Wednesday night. This is 'Life Beyond the Dream', which I heard live this summer at @SPACsaratoga...
This track features one of my favorite things @Phish does: a jam building to a reintroduction of the melody. With a song like this, it can be incredibly moving.
The lyrics "don't give up hope, keep dreaming" don't hurt, either. Enjoy.

A bonus song today to honor the passing of Bill Withers, who, earlier in this thread, I called one of the most underrated and expressive vocalists of his era.
Here's 'Ain't No Sunshine.'
