Two frontline healthcare workers - A&E doctor & nurse - have got in touch with me in last 24 hours alarmed at lack of protective equipment. They say staff exposed to huge risks which will threaten whole system if they get ill
A&E doctor says policy of not testing medical staff even after exposure or displaying symptoms poses huge danger not just to entire medical community but everyone they are in contact with
There is no protective clothing for A&E staff treating walk-in cases. Patients presenting with, say, ankle pain are coughing over staff who are not even wearing basic protection. Staff worried to speak out publicly for fear of repercussions.
Nurse says MoH dashboard last updated yesterday. Her area told 6 further cases confirmed at 9.30am today
Doctors, nurses, healthcare workers, my DMs are open
Another one. Doctors treating confirmed Covid patients told to use basic protection only worried that they're putting put at risk
Suspected corona cases on high dependency wards; no protection for staff unless test comes back positive; 3 day delay for results
Protective equipment sent to GPs: "plastic bin bag with a few masks"
Infectious disease nurses told that protective equipment downgraded to only gloves, gown, gloves, surgical mask. No longer issued with visor, or FFP3 mask
"A lot of the staff in my hospital...are very scared & uncertain"
"We are being told to re-use masks...These are not PAPRs or re-usable masks...We are being set up to get sick"
"We don't want to openly criticise the government, chief med or chief scientist. Because we want the public to have trust in scientists & medics. But we cannot understand the reasoning or logic"
"We have heard from a number of groups of staff that they want us to provide testing for staff who have been exposed. Whilst we understand & appreciate the anxiety, we must prioritise the testing for very unwell patients"
"I am a gastroenterologist..who has been told expressly not to talk to the media. GI endoscopy deemed moderate to high risk. However no routine procedures have been cancelled...and protective equipment has been downgraded. I feel very exposed and worried for myself & colleagues"
Health care assistant: "We might see up to 24 vulnerable people in their homes. We have no face masks and no antiseptic gel. We were told to get our own. I made makeshift masks out of "basket coffee filters". If we get ill, no payment due to zero hours contracts"
Doctor in acute medicine: "Colleague having to self-isolate after being on ward with Corona patients & becoming symptomatic. Told not being tested as not in direct contact. We were wearing full protective gear...now downgraded. Reactive at best and based on lack of equipment"
