things that didn’t make sense to me about popular black tv show, Girlfriends. a thread:
I loved all women for different reasons but Joan and Mya would have NEVER been friends in real life, especially with Joan being Mya’s boss.
you mean to tell me that uppity Toni Childs wouldn’t have done her homework to make sure Todd was actually rich before marrying him? and after finding out he was broke she makes a fool out of herself for him more than once??
Lynn lacked character growth and the fact that she had 5 degrees but couldn’t commit to any one job is a joke. her character deserved more.
Joan and Toni were my personal favorites from the show but their friendship was toxic. there are moments where they are clearly jealous of each other but the way the friendship ended was trash.
Maya and Darnell should not have gotten back together. Why break up for so long, have Maya seemingly move on just to get back together? He guilted her for “cheating” when he literally did so to her in season 1, which was never mentioned again (after actor change).
when Toni had the baby, the baby was dark skinned. all of a sudden the baby turned white and didn’t appear to have a drop of Black in her at all.
Joan and William getting together should have NEVER happened. serious cringe.
I’m glad they ditched the idea of having Joan narrate throughout the show after the first season cause that got annoying, quick.
Toni Childs admitted to having a considerable amount of money stashed away for a rainy day yet her car gets repossessed in one episode
Maya was a funny character but her lack of professionalism in the workplace annoyed me to no end. William should have fired her immediately following that altercation with Rev. Al Sharpton.
I never really liked Darnell. He was always mean to Maya and upset about something but he had a backbone... in the earlier seasons. Once he and Maya got back together (again-a mistake), he became Maya’s handbag and plain filler. His relationship with William was awkward af too.
Monica is similar to Darnell in that I enjoyed her more in earlier seasons. It’s her wit and realistic attitude that won me over. She and William should have never broken up, in my opinion, although I’m glad they did eventually get back together.
Joan was my personal favorite. As needy. And desperate. And classist as she was, I almost always respected her the most... that is until she decided to ditch her career of being a senior-level lawyer to become some unemployed dreamer. It was too “Lynn-esque” for me.
Oh, and she chose him. Over Brock. Aaron was a nice guy and he meshed well with Joan but there seemed to be more passion and love with Brock.
Davis would have also been a better choice for Joan too.
She wasn’t always my favorite character. In the earlier seasons, she was a complete b*tch and I couldn’t see the value of her being on the show at all. Plus her nasty ass colorist comments turned me off. Glad they gave her a complete attitude makeover.
While Veretta (Toni’s mom) is another character I enjoyed on the show, I didn’t always like the things she said. She often referred to Toni’s baby (who is mixed) as her “good hair grand baby”, and called her other daughter, Toni’s sister, “the fat one” (although she was drunk).
One of the strangest storylines for Lynn was her getting into a lesbian relationship with a woman who she saved from attempting s*icide. Neither women end up being lesbians which makes it even more strange.
I didn’t care for how mean Maya’s mom was to Joan.
The fact that Lynn was so lazy most of the series also casts a shadow of doubt on her being able to attain 5 degrees in my opinion.
Back in season 3, Lynn landed an office job after promising to pay her parents back for the school loan they took out for her. It was so odd how everyone was allowed to hang around the office when they didn’t even work there.
Lynn, who was living in a garage at the time, got approved for a credit card with a $5,000 limit. She decides in the end that it’s Toni, the woman living in a luxurious apartment, who needs it more so she gives the card to her. Makes no sense and not something Lynn would ever do.
Toni dated some jerk in season two who had a kid. Not only did he show up to their first date with his child without giving Toni any notice, he decides to leave his child with Toni, a woman he just met, to go get a movie his child demanded to see. pure lunacy.
Whatever happened to Williams dog, Vosco?
I admired Sharon for her confidence and intelligence. Although she could be abrasive, I honestly believe she wanted the best for Joan. It was odd that she and William hooked up and how animated she became towards the end of her run on the show, however.
Sharon invited Joan to her book club, on short notice, and Sharon even asked Joan to host. Sharon and her friends were rude to Joan in her own home and the show never allowed us the opportunity to see Joan redeem herself. Bothered me.
After William and Joan broke it off, William met a woman named Caroline. We only saw her once and never heard about her again, even though William was adamant they’d remain friends.
