So I bought this fun scratch off poster and now it looks like I'll have more time to actually watch these. List is kind of meh but it forces me to watch things I haven't seen before. Brief reviews to follow...
THE EVIL DEAD (rewatch, obv): the stop motion decomposition at the end is truly a treat that I never remember when I think about this movie.
THE DEPARTED (rewatch): way too many n words and f words (and said with such vitrol that I legit wince), but I enjoy the twists and turns. One of the longest movies that holds my attention all the way through.
12 ANGRY MEN: whyyyyyy did I sleep on this for so long? So relevant today. Should be mandatory viewing. And juror 12's glasses are rad.
JURASSIC PARK: maybe not my first time watching the movie but I didn't remember any of it from my childhood. Speaking of which, the kids are absolutely useless and the vegetarian girl eats jello.
BREAKFAST AT TIFFANY'S: wow this is garbage racist gold-digging trash. Why is this considered iconic?
TIL this is where Jets to Brazil got their name.
ENTER THE DRAGON: this RULES. And how the hell did they shoot the mirror scene???
AMADEUS (rewatch): thought this might be a difficult rewatch while working since the story is so involved, but it was still solid all the same. Visually maybe one of my favorite films? Hulce is golden, along with the rest of the cast.
Also realizing I've never seen the theatrical cut--only the 3 hour director's cut. Not sure what they would remove to shorten.
THE SILENCE OF THE LAMBS (rewatch): the third act swapperoo always gets me. Love Foster's accent.
THIS IS SPINAL TAP (rewatch): I'm not sure if this is my favorite comedy, but its certainly not not my favorite comedy. Have a good time all the time. Bonus Billy Crystal cameo.
SEVEN (rewatch): would be down for a redub of this with someone else in all of Spacey's scenes. Regardless, a pedestrian/approachable look at human predictability. I like Fincher's color palette and grit, and I don't care how overrated he is. Solid opening/end credit music.
Redub is likely not the right word in this context. Do not come for me, all 20 of my followers.
LITTLE MISS SUNSHINE (rewatch): Steve Carell is EVERYTHING in this movie. Quite possibly the only movie where a character finding out he's colorblind is more heartbreaking than another character's death. And despite my teenage affinity for this soundtrack, I dislike it now.
MEAN GIRLS (rewatch): still my least favorite of the high school girl gang movies. A victim of incessant overquoting. Can't believe the Plastics never addressed when Cady wore Damian's polo.
SCARFACE: a movie about shitty people doing shitty things, typically lauded by people who like to also do shitty things. I hate everything about this movie (except for some of the set design).
THE GOONIES (rewatch): 80% of this movie is boring. +1 for the Sizzlers reference. TIL Sloth (the late Tom Matuszak) was born in MKE, was the 1st 1973 NFL draft pick, and had 2 Superbowl rings.
BACK TO THE FUTURE (rewatch): a highly regarded film that actually lives up to its hype. I picked up on some references I didn't catch before. Solid soundtrack.
GHOSTBUSTERS: not as good as Back to the Future, but still a "classic" that lives up to the hype. I cackled. Not a home run, but a ton of laughs and a Tunguska reference at the end.
ALIEN (rewatch): FOLLOW QUARANTINE PROTOCOL.
2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY (rewatch): I simultaneously love and hate this movie. Everything about it is perfect, but its the most boring movie I've ever seen.
THE DARK KNIGHT (rewatch): wow some of this dialogue is so cheesy and forced and I thought it was v powerful when this first came out. Regardless, my fave superhero movie and I'm always down for a rewatch.
IN BRUGES: why do people like this movie? I liked some of the dry humor and the ending. None of the characters were likable to me. I think I generally dislike crime movies (with the obvious exception of the previous film).
Progress on the scratch offs.
THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION: 1st act is me feeling generally depressed, 2nd act is me balling my eyes out (actually had to pause & watch dumb reality TV), 3rd act made me feel like it was worth it. I am not cut out for these emotional films. Most heartwrenching death scene. đŸ˜„â›
RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK: was more or less unimpressed until the third act that blew my mind. So many iconic body horror scenes! I love Marion. Also this (though earlier on in the movie): https://www.businessinsider.com/harrison-ford-reddit-ama-2014-4
OFFICE SPACE (rewatch): I used to only find this movie memorable for the rap juxtaposed over the guys beating a copy machine with a bat, but now that I work in an office, I feel this.
E.T. THE EXTRA-TERRESTRIAL: there are a lot of unanswered questions here (why did the aliens come to earth? When did ET visit that guy who said he met him first? Why did ET start to die?) Still, I criiiiiiied.
3 IDIOTS: I hate fairy tale rom com bullshit that forces me to suspend disbelief and I loved this. Could have actually used more song & dance. On Netflix now if you want to dip your toes into Bollywood.
ROSEMARY'S BABY (rewatch): this was the first time I really enjoyed the layers of this film. The use of color! Mia Farrow! Vidal Sassoon! (obv fuck Polanski)
LIFE OF BRIAN: the final scene is the only thing I really enjoyed here. Very predictable and kind of boring? I don't hate Monty Python but this was a yawn for me.
THE PRESTIGE (rewatch): Two men get really jealous of each other and spend their whole lives trying to outdo the other. Also science and David Bowie, I guess.
DRIVE: so I guess I just don't like crime dramas? Gorier than 95% of horror movies. Idgaf about cars but I loved the chase scenes. Wish we got more Oscar Isaac.
PULP FICTION (rewatch): I actually thought I'd hate this upon rewatch but I really love it? With an exception:
THE PIANIST: Unrealistic that the piano in that warzone would have stayed in tune. Another "good movie, bad Polanski."
THE MATRIX (rewatch): I will be exclusively listening to big beat from now on.
FOUR WEDDINGS AND A FUNERAL: I now understand the appeal of Hugh Grant. Andie MacDowell ruins this though.
NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN: So much of this movie is implied and I love that. Most unique murder weapon award. Bardem gets an A+
THE BIG LEBOWSKI (rewatch): John Goodman, goddamn.
SCHINDLER'S LIST: is it okay that I don't really have anything to say about this movie? Glad to finally have seen it.
SNATCH: Nice soundtrack, effective humor, cute dags, but not my thing.
BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN: well acted and depressing af. I wish I liked romance movies more (I loathe them), but in my totally novice opinion I'm pretty sure this is the pinnacle of the genre.
FORREST GUMP (rewatch): oh good, I have a video conference in 10 mins and all I can think about is Jenny
SHAUN OF THE DEAD (rewatch): Everyone else seems to adore this movie but I don't find it funny or enjoyable. Has its moments but they are few and far between for me.
THE TRUMAN SHOW: oh wow hello my new favorite movie. Best thing is the mood, because this has the ability to get really dark and heavy super easily, but it has a certain levity throughout. The balance! And Jim Carrey.
MOONLIGHT: I have too much to say about this one, but it is definitely the must-see film everyone says it is.
WALL-E (rewatch): one of my all time faves! Love the 2001 references, especially fresh off a rewatch of that too.
HER: The sonic and visual interpretation of Urban Outfitters throwing up on itself is not my idea of the future.
FIGHT CLUB (rewatch): a lot of people love to hate this movie and I am not one of them (the ending in the book is better though).
CASINO ROYALE (rewatch): I dislike all of the characters in this movie, but I love Mads as a solid baddie. Excellent pacing. Unnecessary editing to make Daniel Craig's eyes look overly blue.
