USE THE LOCKDOWN TO LEARN GAELIC

Here's a thread of FREE resources to do it:

- the Duolingo course is very good & it's great to start. A top tip that lots of people don't seem to realise is that if you look at it from your browser, you can see the grammar notes and explanations
- Anki is a flashcard app. It's free on Android (Ankidroid) and you can use the browser version on iphone. It isn't pretty, but it is by far the best way to learn vocab, and there's pre-made decks for gaelic you can use: https://ankiweb.net/shared/info/1357645930
- If you're struggling with pronunciation and want really detailed explanations, there is nothing better than this page from Akerbeltz: http://www.akerbeltz.org/index.php?title=Fuaimean_na_G%C3%A0idhlig
- the Scottish Gaelic Grammar wiki is great for clear, detailed grammatical explanations if you're stuck:
https://gaelicgrammar.org/~gaelic/mediawiki/index.php/Scottish_Gaelic_Grammar_Wiki
- am faclair beag is a great online dictionary: http://www.faclair.com  It even has audio for a lot of the words so you can hear it pronounced.
- An Litir Bheag is an ENORMOUS archive of short texts in simple, easy Gaelic - from about number 160 they have full translations, and they all have audio: https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/articles/2pGJYgYPqJfBwSy9JDtpntg/tasglann-archive
- some of my favourite Gaelic musicians to keep you in the mood are Julie Fowlis, Kathleen MacInnes, Karen Matheson and Mànran. I think this song is my favourite:
- http://learngaelic.scot  has loads more good resources ordered by beginner, intermediate and proficient. Including a load of content from Speaking Our Language, some of the most painfully 90s content you will literally ever see:
- italki is an amazing resource in lots of ways, but one great function is the "notebook" where you can write short texts in Gaelic and people can correct them: https://www.italki.com/dashboard
Let me add one thing actually: there are a small number of extremely vocal people in the Gaelic world who will tell you that the only way to learn at all is by paying loads of money to go on an immersion course. That is total nonsense and you should ignore them
