Starting the unofficial #MarchMadness bad/controversial call thread. Let’s relive some Bad Ref Moments! Will update sporadically.
2017 second round: With five minutes left in the game, Gonzaga’s Zach Collins puts his hand through the rim to block Northwestern’s Dererk Pardon’s shot. No goaltending is called, NW coach Chris Collins gets a Technical, and the Wildcats momentum is thwarted

#MarchMadness
1989 S16: W/ 1:47 left, & NCState down 3, Chris Corchiani hits a shot over Georgetown’s Alonzo Mourning, in what appeared to be 3-pt play & Zo’s 5th foul. Instead, ref calls a travel. GTown won 69-61.

Billy Packer called it “the worst call in Tournament history” after the game
2017 second round: Up one w/ 50 seconds left, UNC’s Joel Berry takes a bunch of steps, plows into an Arkansas defender, then throws an off-balance shot which is tipped in on a put back by Kennedy Meeks. No travel or charge called. The Tar Heels would win 72-65.
#NeverForget 2013 National Championship Game. “Foul” on @TreyBurke
2015 Final Four: Under three minutes left, Wisconsin’s Nigel Hayes scores on a clear shot clock violation against Kentucky. Basket counted.
1989 National Championship: Everyone remembers that Rumeal Robinson hit two free throws with three seconds left to give Michigan a one-point win over Seton Hall.

But what about the foul call that put Robinson on the line...
2005 Sweet 16: Villanova’s Allan Ray hits a runner with nine seconds left to cut UNC’s lead to one, but the ref calls a travel even though Ray clearly takes just two steps after picking up his dribble.

Bill Raftery agrees with the refs 🤷‍♂️
2016 Elite Eight: Kansas is down two to Villanova with just over 30 seconds left and Devonte Graham picks up his fifth foul on this
2019 Final Four: W/ under five seconds left & Auburn up two the refs miss a clear double dribble by Virginia’s Ty Jerome.

Seconds later, Kyle Guy is fouled shooting a three (another controversial, but much more controvertable, call) & makes all three FTs to give UVA the win.
1996 Sweet 16: Ray Allen gets away with a clear goaltending on Mississippi State’s Marcus Bullard’s layup attempt. Billy Packer was not happy.

Notwithstanding, MSU beat UConn and advanced to the Elite 8.
2015 National Championship: With under two minutes left and Duke up 63-58, a loose ball is called out on Wisconsin when Duke’s Justise Winslow clearly touched it. The refs went to replay review but didn’t overturn it.
2017 National Championship: With under a minute left and Gonzaga trailing by one, UNC’s Kennedy Meeks scrambles for a rebound and his hand touches the end line while he has the ball. Refs call a jump ball.
1997 2nd Round. With Iowa State down one with 35 seconds left, Kenny Pratt falls on Cincinnati guard Darnell Burton’s leg after he picked up a loose ball, but the ref somehow calls a travel on Burton.

ISU would score the winning basket moments later and win by one.
