You need a distraction...I need a distraction >> some field notes from two recent Sri Lankan themed food tours through Scarborough. I'm really happy with the standards right now. Back New Quality bakery (Kennedy/Ellesmere) - great "roast meat roti", mutton rolls, lamprais..
"Little Lanka" corner at Markham/Steeles is such a great corner to explore food and other aspects of SL/Tamil culture. Applespice Takeout still does great shorteats, but you should order ahead. Also the kothu roti with fish or shrimp is really something.
I'm still surprised no one has written about this Little Lanka complex. ONE corner - five buildings - so many shops, many great things. The supermarket Spiceland is great for spices/produce. and...AND...Mango season folks. It's coming. Batch from northern Sri Lanka just arrvd
Down the street on Markham rd. Look if there's one street to go to EAT its Markham road. Start at Finch head north. End at Steeles (at little lanka). Martin bakery is still gold for kothu roti and short eats.
And finally..I have never been so impressed with a new place. 6 months old and Ruchi is all kinds of good. This is what it looks like when you walk in, everything is empty. Frustrating...But wait, talk to chef "Babu"...
And you will taste..i kid you not, some of the best Sri Lankan hoppers in the GTA. Made to order, its not sitting around. Egg, coconut milk, and my favourite, the mutton curry hopper. Also great is the mutton curry roast (roti). Ruchi is at Markham and McNicoll rd. Go eat.
