When things settle down after the worst of the pandemic, I think many societies will look at their journalists and other critical parts of their information infrastructure with new eyes and respect - and perhaps more support and investment. #Covid_19
A propos of which:

This should be of interest, especially to health funders used to thinking about media as a vehicle for messaging, rather than a core (in part because independent) part of trusted information ecosystems:

(Ctd) here is @amolrajan on that nationwide front page #ThereWithYou campaign.
Gripes about ownership etc aside, right now the core issue is sustaining independent public interest information & reporting - this is what needs £££ to survive the crisis.

And there are many more that need support as this crisis bites - Independents, #mediacoops, hyperlocals, startups, investigative journalism organisations... see the member lists of @ICNNUK @impressreg @themediafund for examples.

Here's what @EndersAnalysis, key analysts of the UK media environment, are calling for in terms of @GOVUK @DCMS emergency support for #journalism (the longer report is currently subscriber-only):
https://www.endersanalysis.com/reports/enders-analysis-calls-government-support-news-magazine-media
👏 @DouglasMcCabe/ @EndersAnalysis call for:
- immediate emergency fund of £100m
- Govt to commit to own advertising, underwrite local business advertising (v smart)
- clarifying/confirming "Essential Service Status"
- fund home delivery
- temporary financial holidays
Further context from @pressgazette to @jimwaterson piece - @PINewsF @ICNNUK @bureaulocal @impressreg survey shows stark impact of #UKlockdown on independents and risk - without emergency fund (see @EndersAnalysis proposal) - worsening UK’s #newsdeserts: https://twitter.com/pressgazette/status/1243580349935947776
Here’s the @PINewsF @ICNNUK @bureaulocal @impressreg survey of UK media in more detail: https://twitter.com/journalism_news/status/1243235151943028736
Though it should focus down on key issues, i.e.:
- as shown, journalism is an essential service, j’s are key workers & so should not face restrictions or crackdown as is happening in some member states
- emergency funding needed to rescue the media now across the whole continent
As some of the other issues, though valid to raise in a normal setting, feel remote from the most immediate and existential challenges that public interest media are facing across the continent in the midst of this crisis...
And absolute blimey here - other examples of politicians and leaders making similar statements around the world?
