Usually the day before March Break, there’s a feeling of excitement and relief in the air. At least that’s how I feel every year. Not this time.
As I made my lunch last night, I was inexplicably sad and I couldn’t figure out why. Doesn’t everyone want a one week holiday to turn into 3 weeks?
I realized this morning why I was feeling that way. I’m sad because my Grade 2 students’ reality and my reality could look very different in 3 weeks time.
I don’t know how any of our families will be affected. I don’t know if the world they live in will be drastically different.
I truly hope any changes will be positive ones for all of us. I want to come back to work in 3 weeks to a barrage of happy stories about all my students’ adventures during their time off.
In the meantime, please use an abundance of caution. I’d rather us be saying in 3 weeks time “wow we overreacted” instead of “we should have done something more/sooner”.
So follow the classroom rules I’ve had for years:
Keep your hands to yourself
No hands near your eyes, nose, or mouth (a necessary rule in primary)
Sing the Happy Birthday song while you soap your hands
