the worst place to get news as a South African right now is News24. I encourage you to find better quality coverage and information online
most international websites like the New York Times have made their coronavirus news coverage available without the paywall (i.e. you don’t need a paid subscription to view and read)

also, SA’s Daily Maverick (no paywall, only ads)
The Guardian
The Atlantic
Pro Publica
based on the infection growth rates, we can expect the virus to peak in SA during April. what we shouldn’t do is make the same mistakes other countries have & sleep on this. an immediate abundance of caution now will mitigate the impact a month from now
SA government, by early next week, should be encouraging companies to have employees work from home (WFH) where possible, cancel/post-postpone social gatherings/events of any size and encourage social distancing
most NB are the incoming flights from higher level infected countries (Italy, South Korea, US etc.) this is probably one of the most disruptive but effective measures a country could take
also, please for the love of fuck, don’t be *that* person. ‘ugh this whole thing is just so blown out of proportion’

1) ya basic
2) you ain’t that special
3) if you have a parent, grandparent or elderly family members, sickly or not, you atleast have a responsibility to them
Singapore is one of the countries that got it right from the get go. Countries like South Africa that haven’t yet been hit by the full force of the pandemic should make this their weekend reading #abundanceofcaution https://twitter.com/WIRED/status/1238409371543121920
welp. I’m unemployed. I’m a freelancer in the film & commercials production industry. guess whose cancelled all international shoots for the next few months? pretty much every agency & production company around the world
that’s 3 confirmed jobs and 2 months of income gone. oh well…abundance of caution and all
production season in Cape Town runs from September to April. peak is January to March. it’d already been a slow start to the year. now this. expected, and of course the correct decision. still, it’s a tough blow, especially going straight into the dormant winter season

imagine that

a whole 1st world country is failing at this

how do you think South Africa, with our deep social inequality, poverty, unemployment, weakened economy, infrastructure & service delivery challenges, will fare? https://twitter.com/theintercept/status/1238921602122878978
at the time of this decision, Lithuania had 7 confirmed cases and no deaths. SA currently has 38 confirmed cases https://twitter.com/sakhr/status/1238914246886514688
knew this was coming. the right decision. on a personal note, this one hurts. after 4 yrs of trying, I finally scored a 21km entry in the ballot. was gonna be my 1st #OMTOM since 2010. oh well. wash yo damn hands ppl
@time Person of the Year? Dr Deborah Birx

with Dr Fauci, they’re 2 of the most important people in the world right now who will lead us out of this with courage & expertise

this woman, however, has to stand behind this orange turd every day & she does it with grace & dignity
would pay a truly handsome sum of money to know what goes through her mind as she stands witness to this bullshit
my Facebook feed this morning is full of screenshots from Twitter. that’s pretty telling
lol. woke up to a house *full* of contractors (electricians, plumbers, carpenters). to be fair, my dad would’ve planned this last week. all these people will have been relying on this income. right decision to not cancel on them
THAT SAID. will be having a chat the dadster about the week ahead, and how we proceed to do home maintenance through a pandemic
ah, quarantine snacks
perfect timing for my seasonal allergies to be flaring up. sneezing like a mf, I guess that’s me indoors for the rest of the week 🤷🏽‍♀️
true story 🙈
the entire world: social distancing, flatten the curve, protect the elderly and vulnerable

my mother: pissed at me because I suggested that going ahead with her sister’s birthday this evening isn’t such a great idea
‘family is important! you younger generation are lost, you forget where you come from.’

me: yip, extremely important mother, hence the fucking concern for you, and the other vulnerable older persons in the family, but go off

brown families, wallahi 🤦🏽‍♀️
it is extremely on brand for me that I’m considering signing up family & friends to *credible* news subscriptions. I cannot believe the shit I’m hearing about what they ‘heard’ on WhatsApp

like. I had to argue calmly that no, Saudi Arabia has not cancelled Ramadan??!!?
panic eating has spoken. I will bake my way through the anxiety. today, dark chocolate and almond crunchies. I made less than half a batch, so it’ll be eaten in a day or 2, which means I can bake more often
hey, South Africa. take a moment to really look at and understand these numbers

less than 900 ICU beds available in state hospitals

less than 180 available in private hospitals

take this seriously

politicians, continuity leaders, religious leaders: do more to educate people
my friends love me 💗
FOR THE LOVE OF POTATO, CAN EVERY MUSLIM FAMILY IN CAPE TOWN STOP HAVING FUNCTIONS THANK YOU

whyyyyyyy are ya’ll not listening man, yoh I CANNOT
Andrew Cuomo is the stern Italian leadership my life needs right now
my accountant asked me today if I have a will. I said no. she said she’d highly recommend I put one in place. mainly for company purposes, so that the bank accounts don’t get tied up in litigation

bitch, read the room
when the inevitable Hollywood film is made about this pandemic, the opening montage of people wilfully ignoring scientific & medical advice by carrying on with life as normal will be 120 mins long #Covid19
hum tummmmm 🎵
spending 70% of isolation time debunking the fake WhatsApp’s my mother receives on her phone

her: ‘they say…’

me: ‘it’s fake. please. any info coming through on WhatsApp is fake’

her: ‘why are you so rude, you don’t even let me finish my sentence, it’s disrespectful!’

me: 😑
one of my closest friends is a doctor. his wife is a doctor too. she’s 6 months pregnant. they’ve been on leave this week, and go back Monday. they tell me they’re not sure what to expect, or how they’ll cope. both work at community clinics
she sent me this photo on Tuesday. taken outside the clinic in Gugulethu

it’s crucial that those of us who can, must do what is asked of us

to keep this pandemic away from the vulnerable

and to avoid overwhelming our fragile healthcare system
my allergies are the worst they’ve ever been. I know my symptoms, I have my meds, I have my ENT doctor on WhatsApp. And yet the mind plays games
me dividing baking recipe quantities so I can make the minimum possible amount to avoid overeating
I could not have timed my sinus operation more poorly had I tried. 2 weeks before a global pandemic. every sneeze, runny nose and headache has me dithering between expected recovery and corona panic
going to be really tough going back to wearing anything but soft, elasticated pants after this
with all the technology we have, you telling me we can’t find a solution to this fake news boomer problem? a fact check system? @WhatsApp come on, do the things
