#taekookau; Space is cold. Jeongguk knows it at this point, is familiar with the chill of living among the stars. But still, it doesn't matter how much he longed to leave the Earth - the cold gets to him, always.

"Everything good, Jeon?"
Kim Namjoon is the head scientist on the Eternity, a twin ship to the one Jeongguk used to work on. The Eternity and the Infinity are mankind's greatest accomplishments, two engineering masterpiece that took years to be perfected and that allowed humanity to travel further
than ever before, reach outside of their own solar system to see /more/.

They didn't think that the minute they reached for something unknown, something unknown would've reached for /them/.

"I'm fine, Kim. Just the cold - I'll never get used to it"
The other scientist hums in acknowledgment, but adds nothing more. Their walk through the hallway is silent, bordering on awkward because Jeongguk has so much to ask but no idea on how to introduce the topic.

It's Namjoon who breaks the silence.
"Have you ever seen any alien lifeform, Jeon? Something not from the Earth," he asks, not turning towards him but staring straight ahead.

"I have, yes" he answers, thinking about his laboratory. "As the main biologist on the Infinity, every sample has to go through me"
"Anything from planet Aldebaran B?"

He thinks about it. After one year aboard the Infinity, he has studied every kind of lifeform from a lot of different planets - plants, flowers, even a bug or two if it was possible to bring them on board. But the name doesn't ring any bells
and he shakes his head, wondering if Kim is going to finally talk about /why/ Jeongguk is on the Eternity right now.

"Our explorers visited the planet, brought back some samples. And some days later, they came"

/They/. Jeongguk knew and still he shivers.
Space is cold, but fear is colder.

In the time they take to reach the ship's labs, Namjoon tells him about the unknown spaceship coming out of nowhere, attacking them mercilessly.
He tells Jeongguk about the shadows stepping out of the alien ship and he doesn't mention the fear and the panic, doesn't mention the deaths, but Jeongguk is clever enough to make the connections.

"The attack came in the Sector C's labs, so many scientists were injured",
'or worst' it goes unsaid, but Jeongguk hears it anyway, "and so we lack the personnel to... deal with the lifeform"

They stop before a door that is sealed shut and locked. An hangar once, something more like a cage now.
"You've never seen an alien, right?" Namjoon looks at him with a grin that has no warmth but has an edge of anxiety instead, and it doesn't calm Jeongguk at all.

"Now you will, Jeon. I hope you're ready"
Inside the hangar the air is even colder. Jeongguk wishes he had something else to wear beside his simple uniform.

"Jeon, this is Jung Hoseok. He's our engineer, it's thanks to him that we were able to detain the alien"
Alien. Jeongguk is in a bit of a daze at the word, but he shakes Jung's hand while Namjoon introduces him. The engineer's grip is strong and firm, even if his gaze is wavering.

Jeongguk wishes he was in the right mindset to be pleasant, but he only has one thing on his mind.
"Where's the alien?"

He doesn't see a cell or another room, so he doesn't know where to look. His eyes wander around, barely paying attention to the other two men with him.

Hoseok chuckles nervously.
He's definitely uncomfortable and it's understandable, with what Namjoon has told Jeongguk just minutes before.

"There"

Jeongguk follows where is finger points to and he's taken back by what he sees.
It's a box. Barely reaching his hips, it looks more like a pet carrier for a giant dog than a cell of some kind. He can see there's a grate on the front, but he can't see inside unless he kneels.

He swallows nervously.
He wonders if the alien is so much smaller than them, since the cage isn't the size of a human.

Well. He can see for himself.

He stands in front of the cage, knees trembling. This creature has attached the Eternity, maybe even killed some people.
His nerves certainly don't settle when Jung warns him that they don't usually show themselves to the alien, so they don't know what the reaction could be. But he can't wait no more so after a quick exhale, he squats down.

Black. There's only darkness in the cage.
Jeongguk is confused, looks at the other men for an explanation. Pitch black is all he can see and he doesn't understand, does the alien need darkness to survive? Where is-

Oh. The darkness /is/ the alien.
He understands this not for some stroke of genius - no, it's much simpler. The darkness shifts and suddenly there are two bright lights pointed towards Jeongguk, two orbs that seem to blink at him.

Jeongguk doesn't know if those are eyes, but whatever they are,
they are breathtakingly beautiful. It's like looking at a nebula trapped inside a glass sphere, the lights changing and moving constantly.

Jeongguk has never got used to the coldness of space, but he has never got used to its beauty either and he's mesmerized by the galaxy
trapped in the orbs that were hiding at the back of the cage.

But then faster than he can predict those orbs shoot forward, towards him, changing from calm blue to dangerous red.

Jeongguk falls on his ass with an undignified shriek, scrambling backwards to get away from cage.
The moment the blackness touches the bars there's the sound of electricity and lighting envelopes the darkness, followed by a high pitched noise.

"Told you to be careful". It's Hoseok who speaks, reaching out with his hand to help Jeongguk up.
But Jeongguk doesn't move. He's too busy observing the darkness, looking at how it recedes to the back of the cage once again. The lights pulse red once again, then settle on a deep purple.

"What- what was that?"

"We told, it's unpredictable-"
"I'm not talking about the alien," he says, a frown deep on his face. He observes the alien, making a guess about the emotions portrayed by the ever-changing light. Wariness, enmity. Fear.

"I'm talking about the torture shocking device."
He can see Hoseok recoiling at the hardness in his voice, but Jeongguk's gaze is unwavering when he looks at the engineer.

"It- it isn't a torture device," he splutters, disbelieving, "it's to keep us /safe/. It- the alien is dangerous. It attacked you, just now!"
"First of all, I don't believe it's an /it/" he says and he sits up, but makes no move to stand up or get far from the cage. He can see that both Namjoon and Hoseok are fairly uncomfortable, but he doesn't care if he's blunt.

"Secondly, he didn't. He was just getting closer."
A wild animal would've rammed against the bars to hurt Jeongguk, would've rattled the cage with some force. But the alien didn't move with violent intent - he moved suddenly, sure, but it was no different from Jeongguk squatting down.
If Jeongguk has to be honest, he isn't even sure that the alien /touched/ the cage. He clearly knows the punishment if he does, he has /learned/ and he /understands/.

"We have to put our own safety first," interjects Namjoon. His voice is firm, but he doesn't sound so sure.
"Its companions have attacked us, killed some of us-"

"His companions?" Jeongguk doesn't know Namjoon, but he seems like a careful man, attentive to detail. The phrasing is odd.

And Namjoon and Hoseok share a look that speaks volumes, something that looks a bit like shame.
"It- he didn't have weapons like the others. That's why we could detain him more easily, even if-"

"So he isn't a soldier, he isn't a threat, but he's locked in an electrified tiny cage and it isn't torture?"
"He /is/ a threat," replies Namjoon, harsh and final. There's steel in his gaze now and Jeongguk has to remind himself that he wasn't there when the attack happened, he hadn't to live through it.

But the situation doesn't sit well with him anyway and it doesn't matter that
he's younger and sitting on the floor like a child - he will stand his ground.

"It- he rebelled a lot. We- we tried to communicate but it was impossible and it- he only replied to physical stimuli"
Jeongguk ignores Hoseok's stutter, his trembling hands. He ignores the fact that Hoseok was there when the alien was first captured, that he has his reasons to be fearful and careful.

He clenches his jaw and ignores it all. "Physical stimuli? What have you done?"
"Nothing to hurt him," says Hoseok, and this time his voice is stable. He sounds meek, but genuine. "We just tried to touch him."

Jeongguk frowns, but he nods. He turns his gaze towards the cage, towards the alien and he stops breathing for a second.
The little galaxies are back, but this time they are a teal color. They look curious and calmer now, but maybe Jeongguk is just projecting.

"We think he can change shape. But he never did since we trapped him"
Jeongguk hums, gaze fixed on the moving lights. The alien keeps his distance from the bars now, inching a bit closer by the second but never touching the cage.

"Take away the electricity"

He demands so while looking at the alien and he just /knows/ that he's looking back,
observing him with just as much interest.

"That will open the cage, too"

Hoseok's words are a warning spoken with incredulity and Jeongguk thinks that maybe he should be more careful, treat the alien with fear like the other do.
But he's hopelessly intrigued by the bright lights, the different colors they display.

"Then do it. You can go out if you're worried"

They don't. They stay, ready to help if the alien attacks him, and they take the electricity off the cage.
There's a click, the lock of the cage opening. The lights go acid green for a second, then they flash purple.

"Don't be scared," says Jeongguk, wondering if the alien has a minimum grasp on their language. "You can come out"
The alien doesn't move. The lights flash between purple and magenta, and Jeongguk thinks that might mean fear and anger. He's wary, understandably so.

So Jeongguk takes the first step. He gets closer to the cage, opens it.
He scurries back right after, half because he wants to leave the alien his space and half because he's doubting himself now, feeling foolish at his recklessness.

The darkness advances slowly. Now that he can see him better, it isn't a mist but it isn't solid either.
But has he comes out of the cage the alien takes a shape that resembles one of a human and Jeongguk's heart hurts at the suspicion that he had to make himself smaller to fit in the cage.

"I'm not going to hurt you, I swear"
Jeongguk says so and he stretches his hand towards the alien. His arm is trembling pathetically, but his voice carries no lie.

And it works. It works because the darkness changes and shifts, until what looks like a normal human arm extends towards Jeongguk.
Their fingers touch. It's an electrifying feeling and Jeongguk is tempted to yank his hand away, but he stays still.

The lights are bright and acid green, pulsing and getting more vivid.

"It's ok," says Jeongguk, but this time he suspects that he's speaking more for himself.
But the alien understands, or so he thinks because the hand that looks like a shadow touches him gingerly. He brushes the back of Jeongguk's hand, then his forearm. The fingers explore his arm with fleeting touches that are scorching warm against the frigidness of space.
Something else happens then. The alien stretches his fingers, his palm touching Jeongguk's arm fully, and then he starts changing color. Tanned skin spreads from the tip of his fingers to the rest of his arm, and Jeongguk watches in disbelief as the alien takes a much more human
form. He even has clothes on, even if they are so bizarre that no one would believe they come from the Earth.

He was right. The lights were his eyes and they remain the same, only trapped between eyelids instead of floating among darkness.
The alien open his mouth and makes a sound, a gurgle that Jeongguk doesn't understand in the slightest.

"I'm- I'm sorry, what?" he stammers, intimidated by the sheer beauty of the alien's face. He has a human form but he could hardly pass for human - his facial structure
is too perfect, too carefully constructed to be natural.

The alien repeats the sound, but this time he pats his own chest while he does.

Oh. Oh!

"Your name! You're telling me your name!"
The alien nods enthusiastically, either because Jeongguk is right or because his eagerness is contagious.

"I'm Jeongguk. Je on gguk," he says, repeating his name a bit slower to make it clearer. He pats his own chest in emphasis.
The alien nods, serious. He seems to contemplate something, deep in thought, before he tries to speak again.

"Teeeeee haaaaaaang" is what the sounds he does sound like and after a few tries, Jeongguk repeats to him something he deems an acceptable version of his name.
"Taehyung." He tastes his name on his tongue, knowing that the alien is probably settling for a pronunciation that isn't correct, but at least is close.

Taehyung nods and claps his hands excitedly, even if his face remains mostly motionless.
[finishing this later I'm having dinner now!!]
It's a wild guess, but Taehyung probably doesn't know how a human face works, unused to display emotions through that. So his body moves excitedly, but his face stays still.
He's grabbing Jeongguk's arm with both his hands, chanting an aborted version of his name ("Jan Giuk! Jan Giuk!") when he suddenly stops, face still impassible but eyes shining purple.

Jeongguk follows his gaze and he sees Namjoon and Hoseok standing near them.
They are both wearing stunned faces, the wariness still there. Hoseok inhales and exhales a breath loudly, before he steps towards them.

Immediately, Taehyung drops his human facade like it's a costume.
He goes back to his dark, incorporeal form and he scurries away, hiding himself in the cage again. His eyes are back to magenta, pulsing with apprehension.

Jeongguk snaps his head to the side, towards Hoseok, and the motion is so vicious that the engineer takes a step back.
"You want me to communicate with him, right?" he asks, raspy and angry. 'Nothing to hurt him' his ass.

Taehyung clearly doesn't trust Hoseok or Namjoon and for a good reason - Jeongguk wouldn't have good feeling for the people who trapped him, either.
"If you want me to /talk/ with him, you have to leave us alone."

"Out of question," replies Namjoon right away, arms crossed. There's a tight tension in his body and Jeongguk notices that he doesn't take his eyes off the open cage.
"We don't know if it'll attack you-"

The fucking gall he has. "He's not an animal," he hisses between clenched teeth, his growl a little too emotional. He always gets attached too soon, Jimin always reprimands him for it.
"He'll attack me if I threaten him, like you attacked him when you thought he was a threat to you. But now you made him /terrified/ of you, and he won't be able to tell me anything in that form"
His words make perfect sense, he knows that when he sees the grimace in Namjoon's face. But the scientist has his eyes narrowed in a determined frown, and he's sure that convincing him won't be easy.

"Namjoon, let him try."
The unexpected help comes from Hoseok. He looks different now that fear isn't clouding his behavior - more self-assured and stronger. Jeongguk suspects the Hoseok he first met isn't how he usually is at all.

"There are cameras everywhere, I can even install more.
But we need to know what happened, what they /want/. Let him communicate with the alien."

Namjoon doesn't look fully convinced, but he looks like he reluctantly agrees and that's enough for Jeongguk.

"Monitor us, record us - whatever you want. But leave us alone for a while."
He sounds bratty, he knows that, but seeing Taehyung squeezed in a cage is making his heart ache with pain. And he won't get out until the other two are in the room.

Namjoon sighs, but he complies. "If you make a single distressed sound we are coming in," he declares, and
Jeongguk has a moment of lucidity long enough to recognize that Namjoon is only trying to look out for him.

"If something happens, I scream" he promises with half a grin. Hoseok smiles at him, bright and wide. Namjoon scoffs, but his shoulders relax with the next exhale.
Jeongguk watches them leave, waits until they close the door after themselves - Namjoon tries to protest, but Hoseok drags him away and promises they will look at them through the surveillance cameras.

The door clicks. As soon as it does, Jeongguk crawls towards the cage.
"Taehyung?" he calls, and the lights appear among the darkness, bright pink and shaky.

"They are gone for now, I promise. Why don't you come out? I bet it's cramped there."

He has no idea how much Taehyung understands, but he has to get the gist of it at least.
The darkness crawls towards the opening and then Taehyung adopts him human form again, crouching at the edge of the cage.

The pink eyes mellow in a calmer purple, but when Taehyung calls him with a feeble "Jan Giuk?", his voice is trembling.
"Yes?" he says, not sure what Taehyung is asking him. The alien is curled in himself, still inside his cage, and it makes his stomach churn to think that he has lived inside that thing for what? A few days? An entire week?
He crawls nearer, uncertain about what can he do to put him more at ease. It's then that he notices that Taehyung isn't looking at him but the open door of his cage

Oh. He must think they put the electricity back when they were talking and he will get hurt again if he approaches
"It's okay, it won't hurt you, see?" he says and grabs the door of the cage, making sure Taehyung sees it's safe. "We didn't turn it back on. It's okay."

Taehyung's eyes turn blue, then teal. He crawls out of the cage warily and as soon as he's out he sits on the floor.
He watches Jeongguk, still squatting near the cage, and he stretches one arm towards him. He doesn't understand at first, but then Taehyung opens and closes his hand and nods and Jeongguk understands that he's telling him to get closer.
He does so, crawling on the floor like a baby. He mimics Taehyung and sits cross legged before him, and then he waits for him to do something. He doesn't want to scare him off.

Taehyung has no fear towards him it seems, because as soon as Jeongguk is sitting he grabs his arm.
He holds the arm with both hands and he touches it lightly, turns it one way and then another to inspect it fully. It's like he's checking for something, looking for-

Injuries. He saw Jeongguk touch the previously electrified bars and he's checking if he's okay.
Jeongguk wants to cry a little bit, but he doesn't want to alarm the alien and so he holds back his tears. Gosh, he's too emotional.

A happy sound alerts him that Taehyung is satisfied with his inspection, but he doesn't let go of his arm.
He seems fascinated with it - playing with his fingers, pinching his skin, tracing his veins, trying to feel his bones by pressing on the sharp edges of them. Some touches are ticklish and Jeongguk ends up giggling at times.
This pleases Taehyung immensely, or at least he thinks so from the vivid green of his eyes and the low rumble he makes with his chest. He tries to make him giggle again and while he fails to understand what tickles Jeongguk, he manages to make him laugh again with his antics.
Taehyung doesn't smile, doesn't move his face at all, but his eyes sparkle with greens and yellows and blues, and Jeongguk is sure that all the sounds he's making are his own version of a laugh.

He forgets about asking him the "important" questions.
Instead, he tries to teach him new words. It's immediately clear that Taehyung is either brilliant or part of a specie that's way more advanced than humans - in an hour or so he manages to memorize and understands some basic sentences, even says them back to Jeongguk.
"Nice to meet you, Jeongguk" he says, words stilted and pronounced oddly as if he has a thick accent. He supposes he has, except that it's mostly because he isn't used to have vocal cords at all.

But to Jeongguk it sounds incredible.
An alien is saying "nice to meet you" to /him/. He's communicating, leaning fast. And he's doing it with Jeongguk.

"Nice to meet you too, Taehyung" he replies and yeah.

Very nice to meet you indeed.
or: humanity lives in space now, the Earth too overcrowded to house them all. Jeongguk doesn't mind - except for the cold, of course. He kinda misses the sun, but it was hard too see with the fog of pollution over their head, anyway.
He isn't cleared to see other planets for now, but he's happy studying and analyzing little pieces of them that the explorers take back to the Infinity, the immense space station he got assigned to and the closest thing to an artificial planet together with its twin, the Eternity
But then news of an attack on the Eternity reaches them. They need a biologist for some reason and they need it /now/, so Jeongguk is send there with a vague warning that he'll have to deal with "something alien".

Or better, /someone/ alien.
Taehyung is a scientist himself, even if in a way that's completely different from Jeongguk's own profession. The Neh'val (his race, inhabitants of a scorching hot planet the humans call Aldebaran B) are more attuned to nature, used to /feel/ rather than study.
And so when someone lands on their planet and takes away their energy sources from the ground, what they need to /survive/, he's send along soldiers to retrieve. Humans are thieves that try to blow up their ship when they approach - it's a series of misunderstandings
that make their first meeting bloody and violent, a massacre on both sides.

And Taehyung is only a scientist there to make sure that their nucleus comes back home safe and sound, but his lack of weapons is his downfall and he's captured.
The humans don't understand him and they don't seem to /want/ to understand him. He needs to touch them to understand and feel their composition, to shift in a form similar to them, but every touch is pain and he is terrified, locked in a cage several sizes too small and
unable to communicate anything. He's desperate and lost and he has resigned himself to his fate when something happens.

A new human appears, and this one /looks/ at him. This one understand that his eyes are a gateway for is emotions and he interprets them
grossly, sometimes wrongly, but he /tries/.

Jeongguk tries and Taehyung has finally the opportunity to try as well, because now that he isn't in pain and locked anymore holy shit!! Aliens!! The Neh'val has never seen an alien before.
Jeongguk and Taehyung learn from each other, meeting halfway through their opposing cultures.

There is still a nucleus to bring back home and some misunderstandings to clear, but they have time for that.
In the meantime Jeongguk is so eager to learn everything he can and teach in return. But he doesn't think he has much to teach to a boy with a galaxy in his eyes.

Space is cold. But Taehyung's body runs hotter than anything human and Jeongguk finds that space got a lot warmer.
OK BUT!! tae is absolutely far from anything human and his people live most of their lives as intangible blobs of darkness with bright eyes so. he doesn't KNOW how to use his human body
like, when he wants to know about something he's used to: get his eyes close to it and touch it, so when he tries to do it in his human body he just. faceplants in everything he's curious about.
gguk: this is a sample of dirt from Mars! it's red bc it has iron oxide and rust in it :D

tae: oh lemme see *faceplants in the pot of dirt*

gguk: taEHYUNG NO
ok but imagine gguk having a very fluffy plushie or blanket and tae is!! so!! excited!! they feel so good!! so he just rubs his cheeks on it and kicks his legs and makes a lot of high pitched happy noises 🥺 bc he really loves the feeling so he rubs his face on it 🥺
and like, his hair goes all frizzy bc of static 😭💕 and if gguk has a soft sweater he goes all "lemme feel it!!!" and he just rubs his face on it 🥺 and ggukie giggles bc he's ticklish 😔✋
and taehyung is fuckin smart. like, supreme genius level of smart and he learns gguk's language pretty soon but he translates some expressions of his own into it.
instead of "when I'm asleep" he keeps using "when I'm not here" because?? if he's sleeping he isn't mentally here??? and gguk is like "yes but your body is here it isn't like you go away" and tae is like "my own self isn't dictated by my body but only housed by it"
and he goes like "if there was a way for you to use my body, would that person be you or me?" and so he keeps referring to sleep as "moments when he isn't here"

gguk has a mild crisis abt it bc. it's true. he's not really in his body in a sense when he's asleep???
he loses his motherfuckin mind over it while tae is just "listen if i'm not here i'm not here it's simple just bc u call it falling asleep doesn't make me /be/ here yk" but gguk is just like "HMMMM 🤯 I MEAN IT'S TRUE?? 😶 guess my entire perception of life gets fucked now 🤪"
tae: *innocently says smth bc of his way of living*

gguk, going through a mild life crisis while his whole perception of life gets shifted on its axis: GOOD! COOL!
ok but tae's people are all "be one with nature we are nature" so the moment he learns that humans eat things made in a laboratory that have NO REAL FOOD IN IT JUST THE FLAVOR OF IT he's just liek. "bro u do wHAT???".
gguk: why don't we eat some instant ramen!

tae: what is it? :D

gguk: it's noodles probably made of plastic and I put some tasty dust on it to trick myself into thinking this is actually made with vegetables and chicken

tae:
taehyung just fully embodies these memes just so you know he's DISGUSTED at how humans treat their planet
ok but at some point tae tries to learn how to express emotions in a human way but gguk struggles to explain something so visceral so he goes for the best thing to express emotions: memes and reaction pics

which helps!! but as a side effect that tae takes things a bit literally
tae: *lies on the floor and starts screaming*

gguk: homie. bro. what the fuck.

tae: I am expressing emotional distress
tae is really determined to learn how to use the face but there are so many muscles involved!! it's difficult :(( but he tries very hard anyway so he spend a lot of time just trying to feel what his face can do
he wants to learn how to smile bc gukkie's smile is pretty 🥺 but it's difficult and at first he shows his teeth but he looks like he's growling 🥺 and he gets really frustrated to the point of almost crying bc he wanna show gguk that he's happy with him 🥺
so gguk's help!! he lets tae touch his face when he's smiling so he feels with muscles should move 🥺 and then gukkies plays with tae's cheeks and moves them to mimic a smile so tae can learn 🥺 which is a perfect excuse to let him play with tae's soft cheeks bc he loves them 🥺
and eventually he gets the hang of it!! he thinks he's pretty close to it and gguk doesn't know so he'll surprise him ;) ;)

so he lets some days pass and then gguk does smth and tae's like "oh this is a smile moment!!" and he just burst in one of those huge, eyes-closing grins
and jeongguk is so genuinely surprised that he starts crying?? it's just. tae is so genuine and he worked so hard to portray emotions in a way that jeongguk can fully understand just to make him aware of how happy tae is to talk to him and listen to him and be with him
and tae is like "oh no is my smile wrong did I get it wrong again? :((" and he feels like crying from disappointment but gguk reassures him that he's so happy he's crying and tae is just 🥺 he's really happy ok 🥺😭
ok but about the screaming for emotional distress. as @primarchkryik suggested it becomes an actual thing so the scenario changes to

namjoon: what the FUCK are u both doing

taekook, both laying on the ground and screaming: we are expressing emotional distress
and odfgjod imagine gguk having in his room a poster from movie Alien with the "in space no one can hear you scream" line and tae sees them and he's like "oh!! a motivational quote!!! our worries are irrelevant at the end of the day!!" so he just. uses it ALL the time.
and like one time hobi is ranting to him and goes "ahah i'm annoying sorry don't kill me" and tae just says the line to comfort him but. he says it with a serious tone and his impassive face and hoseok kinda. pisses himself and loses 10 years off his lifespan.
then he learns how to smile and it gets WORSE bc he's like "in space no one can hear you scream :D :D" with like the biggest grin and half the crew is like "ok so taehyung CAN and WILL kill us if he wants to we need to keep him happy"
so like (rolo thanks again here 😔✊) tae is convinced everyone is trying to spoil him when in reality it’s a “if we upset them baby the baby WILL murder us our sleep”
tae is a little happy baby and he's convinced that his screaming therapy and advice is working and the crew is so thankful to him while the truth is that he accidentally built a reign of terror
