Imagine a world in which the Bernie Sanders who would have us believe he waited for Elizabeth Warren to run in 2015, and purportedly would have deferred to her if she had, actually did so in 2019.
Imagine a world in which Bernie Sanders, who last time lost to a woman by over 3.5 million votes, when he this time saw an unbelievably qualified and deeply progressive woman enter the race before him, didn’t think to himself, “I should run against her.”
Imagine a world in which Bernie Sanders didn’t split the progressive vote away from the only obvious choice in Elizabeth Warren, but instead endorsed her and united his coalition with hers.
Imagine a world in which we didn’t endure a year’s worth of sexist lies, baseless insults, continual harassments, gaslighting, snake emojis, and all manner of such toxic abuse from the supposedly progressive Sanders base, eliminating any chance of a united progressive front.
Imagine a world in which, failing any of the above, Bernie Sanders had at least realized after suffering a heart attack at 78 years old that he was not the right fit for this job, dropped out, and endorsed Elizabeth Warren.
Imagine a world in which Bernie Sanders didn’t wait to correct the lies his base spread about Elizabeth Warren until immediately after he allowed those lies to push her out of the race, at which point he then had the audacity of wanting to secure her endorsement.
Imagine a world in which #NotMeUs had even the tiniest shred of truth to it.
The truth is this: Bernie Sanders’ ego is the primary reason we’re likely ending up with Joe Biden instead of the most progressive president this country would have ever had in Elizabeth Warren. I hope it was worth it. I’ll not soon be forgetting.
