A thread on how Gandhi developed the insane ideas he did. (swarajya = give up all industrial products, we are all one (hindu muslim), no machinery etc). Gandhi was a typical westernized indian who grew up foreign to his own culture. He was Nehru before Nehru, in the flesh. 1/
Gandhi was one of the first to study English in his family. He studied Sanskrit via English from Parsi teachers. He broke his caste sabha rules to go to London. Enamored by the "heart of civilization" itself. There, he joined a society of vegetarian anglos who took a liking..
to him. These people were the hippies of their time. Funny enough, it were these ppl who introduced Gandhi to Hinduism, Buddhism. His 1st introduction to his own faith was via anglos in london. Bc they liked Hinduism, Gandhi started liking it. He had never read the Gita before.
Gandhi met Helena Blavatsky, a new age reformer who told him about Hinduism & its spirituality. This made Gandhi less embarrassed about his "superstitious faith" & he decided to read the Gita for the 1st time in his life.
Gandhi came home but felt bored. He wanted to go back to an exciting life in modern cities. He found an opportunity in South Africa & pounced on it. Leaving his wife & children behind, he set sail for Durban to do business with 2 muslim gujaratis.
Now, in 1893, South Africa was divided b/w a boer part and the anglo part. It was multicultural & had many Indians (indentured servants, laborers), many americans & europeans. As of now, Gandhi was a staunch servant of the Raj, fully believed in anglo supremacy & british rule.
His time in London had made him feel he was "one of them", one of many loyal dutiful british empire subjects. However, it was in SA he got to see what race in the 19th century really was. It was the shock of his life. He was treated like a literal subhuman by the ruling whites.
The white south africans hated anyone dark–– for them gandhi was the same as the black tribals. A thought that was very insulting to Gandhi.
He was insulted on his first day in court & he realized the subhuman status of Indians in SA. The Indians there pretended to be Arabs, while the Parsis called themselves Persians. All his life, gandhi had bought into the idea of the code of anglo law & its superiority. Now...
he felt humiliated and embarrassed. To cope with it, he drafted a petition asking the whites to not treat the Indians like the blacks because they were fellow Aryans of Indo-European lineage. Yes, this was the extent Gandhi wanted to fit in to European society.
Gandhi argued black africans were racially inferior but Indians had the same superior propensity towards freedom & civilization. The "flower of the indian nations" did not deserve to be treated like "Asian dirt" - his exact words.
Gandhi further said "hardly have i known anyone to cherish more loyalty to the british constitution than myself" Lel. Now, is it starting to make sense? let's go on more...
Of course, this had zero affect on the whites. In fact, the whites got more angry & almost lynched gandhi when he came back to South Africa (lmfao). Gandhi developed a seething resentment and hatred for the white people, he had done everything to be one of them & gotten rejected.
"hang old gandhi on the sour apple tree" the anglos shouted as he came back. a mob caught him and pelted him with bricks, snatched his turban and kicked him on the floor until he was saved by a good samaritan
By now, Gandhi had been fully humiliated beaten & almost lynched. He felt shameful & disgusted with the british. He wanted to be one of them but got rejected time & time. What next? he decided to show how masculine he was & joined the boer war to fight for the anglos!! lmfao
Gandhi was desperate to prove his masculinity to win adoration in the eyes of the anglos, the masculinity of his people
Gandhi even taught his children to sing "God Save the Queen"
Gandhi decided he needed to fight for the british empire in the boer war, to prove his patriotism. His exact words "my two passions are tending to the sick & my british patriotism" Lel
Gandhi tells his fellow Natal Indians, please fight in the war to show the colonists that 'we are worthy subjects of the Queen'
Gandhi then organizes his fellow natal indians to become medics for the war. Those Indians are of all castes, creeds and religions. We can see by now, Gandhi had already developed feelings of "brown unity" –– by being exposed to racialism he had become hyper aware of race
He considered all brown Indians as part of the Indian nation, they would all do him proud. Well, the war was over. Gandhi was delighted on being given the war medal & felt his fellow indians had proven their loyalty as worthy colonial subjects. Alas, that wasn't true.
Gandhi still didn't back down, he became the head of a paper he called the "British Indian Association" & started discussing the purity of the Indian race. Gandhi said Indians & Brits should united to preside over the blacks. Gandhi was a supporter of apartheid.
He became a liberal segregationist & had zero to no respect for south africa's blacks. He was a race purist who wanted to do anything the anglos did to fit in. He did everything possible & still got rejected. This is where his hatred of colonization comes from, hatred of whites.
Ironically, Gandhi feels it was Tolstoy who introduced him to non-violence. But it was reading Ruskin that Gandhi developed the ideas of rejecting capitalism, modernism rejecting industry & being "self-reliant" as a people. Combine with his views on race "brown unity"
You can see what kind of a dangerous cocktail was brewing here. Anyway, it was 1906 by now & freedom was brewing in India. Curzon had partitioned bengal drawing heavy backlash. Meanwhile, Gandhi was in SA safely sitting & observing, still being a british dog of course.
Meanwhile, Gandhi had already started working together with Indian Muslims as fellow Indian british subjects to protest against a new british law that took fingerprints of indians. Gandhi here addressed a crowd of muslims from the hamidia islamic society & hindus
further lolmaxx, gandhi & his muslim friends then raised three thunderous cheers for king-emperor edward VII and sang "God Save the King"

despite all this, this dude was still cucked (mind you, he was 40-45 yrs old here, not some young kid)
Gandhi did not want to end racism or class distinctions, he wanted to be on the right side of the color line. His root cause of frustration was being considered inferior by the anglos, this led him to eventually think "fellow brown muslims" are his brothers (in race), you can see
parallels in gandhi and modern day leftists in white countries to club all brown people together into a "person of color" category to fight the whites, same thing happened here and it is what shaped gandhi's views, politics. for how could fellow brown muslims be enemies??
Moving on, it was 1908 & Gandhi had coined the term satyagraha after getting inspiration from new-age thinkers, suffragettes & religious ideas. His first campaign was a massive failure bc Gandhi simped out in the end. The campaign was over refusing to get fingerprinted..
Gandhi told his followers "We will get fingerprinted, but voluntarily" but all of us will do it. but because it is voluntary, we have won on principle! as you can see, this didn't go well. gandhi became the most hated indian in SA & was beaten up by muslim pathans in an alley
Anyways, it starts to get typical now. By 1910, the freedom movement had turned violent with the likes of madan lal dhingra, aurobindo, savarkar espousing a militant hindu youth. Gandhi was disgusted at this & called them 'stupid young men' in the grip of a 'mad idea'
Gandhi was still a miserable failure, a bootlicker & had gone to London to argue for rights of "British Indians" in South Africa. Gandhi met Savarkar in London at a keynote and was actually seething by Savarkar's' speech. He was distressed murderous acts were being glorified.
Savarkar hated gandhi and his path for nonviolent resistance. He said "because you deny us a gun, we pick up a pistol. you deny us light we gather in darkness to knock off the fetters that hold mother india down"

"there can be no substitute for force to achieve complete freedom"
What compelled Gandhi to take part in the Indian nationalist movement was NOT a disgust for british rule in india, it was his disgust for the growing militancy of indian nationalism. Lmfao
Read this carefully now. What truly formed Gandhi's views were famous thinkers like Tolstoy. The idea of "unlearning" modernity was given by Tolstoy to Hindus. Gandhi loved this. Why? He hated europeans so much now, he wanted to distance India from EVERYTHING modern.
Ruskin, Tolstoy, Maine were what formed Gandhis opinions on life. He was quite the indologist himself in that way. Western rebellious thinkers shaped his views a lot. Few of his views were truly original at all.
Gandhi made the worst mistake possible here. He had tried all his life to fit in the europeans, who had rejected them. So he did what? He decided to reject everything europe had ever made, ever done. Out of spite, out of ego, out of vengeance. He wanted nothing to do with them.
Gandhi rejected modern medicine, industry, machines, law, rail, boats, steam power, communication. He failed to understand civilizations are built on technology transfer. It was the Indians 4000 yrs ago who gave the numbers to the arabs who gave it to the romans. This IS life.
Out of pure vengeance on being denied a seat at the table, out of proverbial sour grapes he decided to disown everything useful to India. Gandhi terribly misunderstood the Gita to be about non-violence. He misunderstood India to have a spirit of ahimsa. These erroneous views..
