People refuse to go back the right road because they have travelled so many miles in the wrong one.

I used to wonder why, after all sunk cost fallacy is just that, a fallacy, but now, Im not so sure.
Even if they were to turn back to where they started, they wouldn’t be the same
Those wrong miles that people travel, that work and suffering they endured to move, it becomes a part of them. They put their soul in the struggle, and thus it will always be a part of them.
To forsake the wrong path will be to forsake one’s soul, not an easy thing to do.
Those miles travelled become a part of them, one they will never go away.
So when they finally go down the right path, it doesn’t seem so right anymore. They cannot be the people they dreamed to be, they are tainted now, humiliated, those wrong miles are a part of them.
That dream slowly dies, because they are not the same person that dreamt it in the first place.
They know that when they reach the end of the right path, it’s not going to be the same as the one before they took the wrong one.
I think that’s what kills people on the inside.
That pain, is what prevents them from changing. Because they seek to cut out something that couldn’t be separated, the struggle in the wrong road.
Instead they should make peace with it, and accept it as a part of their self. They will at least be closer to their ideal self.
You can see it in many people here on twitter.
“I used to be a loser but now I am not”
They still feel the loser inside them, seeking validation from strangers that “Yes, you are not that loser anymore”, as they think that he will finally be cast out of their identity....
It still haunts them, even if they are on the correct path. They haven’t made peace with themselves, resenting what they were but never being able to undo what was done.
Sad and pitiful to witness, see that it doesn’t happen to you as well.
