I-know-i-was-obsessed-with-Phantom-of-the-Opera-only-6-months-ago-and-now-it's-time-to-become-obessed-with-Les-Mis-i'm-so-very-terribly-sorry, a Thread™
EXCUSE ME COULD YOU NOT I'M GAY I'M NOT SUPPOSED TO FALL IN LOVE WITH A 50yo FICTIONAL CHARACTER
Also if you think I'm underlining every single sentence I love in this book with a pencil, and writing "JEANJEAN" in the margins like a smitten schoolgirl, then I'm very sorry to say that you're right
Les miserables, 40 pages into Waterloo : I don't know what day it is anymore. Will Waterloo ever end? When will my husband Jean Valjean return from war
"un général anglais [...] leur cria : Braves Français, rendez-vous ! Cambronne répondit : Merde !"
Glad to see we haven't changed
it's rant time about the bbc adaptation of les mis but!!! a.davies really fucked every. single. character. And he had such a wonderful cast ? It could have been so good ? Tbh, i really enjoy the costuming and the actors and all but GOD!
none of what the characters do make sense when compared to the source material. And a.davies really had the gall to say he "wanted to rescue this great book" ? Has the man even READ IT ffs
Victor Hugo said Big Quarantine Mood
So Javert's alignment is Horny Repressed 🤷‍♀️
So Valjean is being buried alive, which is a phobia of mine, but it's okay it's cool hahaha I'm fine, see, cool cool coolcoolcoolcool no doubt
"Elle était d'une tristesse obscure dont elle n'avait pas elle même le secret. Il y avait dans toute sa personne la stupeur d'une vie finie qui n'a pas commencé." turn out I haven't been Javert this whole time but Mlle Gillenormand l'aînée 😬
Victor Hugo be like : all my good and pure characters will love nature and tend to it in some ways
Aaaand I can feel myself falling in love with each and everyone of them already 😬
Me: Oh no I've only read Enjolras', Combeferre's and Jehan's description and I already love them so much, they're gonna die I can't
@_Safronia_ :
D'abord Je'a Valjean maintenant Jehan.
(MAIS EN MÊME TEMPS SI VICTOR HUGO ARRÊTAIT DE CRÉER DES PERSONNAGES AUSSI DOUX AUSSI LA HEIN. Bon.)
The more I read about les Amis the more in love I am with each and everyone of them. It's gonna hurt isn't it
"M.Mabeuf avait pour opinion politique d'aimer passionnément les plantes, et surtout les livres" ah, c'est un Big Mood
JEANJEAN IS BACK!! I loooove Valjean's descriptions, he's the Saddest Dad I just want to hug him!
And I do love les Amis but Valjean will always be first in my heart
OH G O D Marius just found Jean's handkerchief and thinks it's Cosette's and he's literally sleeping with it, the second hand embarrassment is real
So, I have finished the first volume of Les Mis and I may be re-reading all my fav parts already (and yes, they might all be about Valjean)- I'm not even ashamed at this point
Valjean's literally described so many times as an affectionate man, he enters Toulon crying for his nieces and nephews, the women in Montreuil-sur-Mer call him a "kind old bear" to his face as Monsieur le Maire, he sees Cosette one (1) second and decides he's gonna be a Dad™ now
I HAVE TOO MANY EMOTIONS ABOUT THIS MAN curse you Mr Hugo for creating such a perfect Sad Dad. (also, Javert. Javert is so good too. I just. Okay I'll stop now)
Uh-if-you-thought-this-thread-was-over-i'm-sorry-to-say-there's-still-800-pages-to-go, a Thread™ pt.2
TWO PAGES IN AND VICTOR HUGO'S ALREADY MENTIONING JEAN VALJEAN IN PASSING, HOW BEAUTIFUL HIS WHITE HAIR IS AND HOW VERY SAD HE LOOKS
*clutches chest* m y h e a rt
Two pages in and I'm already writing "JEANJEAN" in the margin, this doesn't bode well
I adore every description of Javert, who seems larger than life, almost a beast, but what I love most is when he's depicted doing something mundane. It brings something human to his character--
Javert: alors parlez.
Marius: et très pressée.
Javert: alors, parlez vite.

STOP MAKING ME FALL FOR OLD SAD DUDES GODDAMMIT
Javert's description of the Patron-Minette gang when he speaks to Marius, I can't,, "une espèce de petit muscadin du diable", "un grand gros massif matériel qui ressemble à l'éléphant du jardin des plantes"
Victor keeps mentioning how tall Javert is and how big is hands are like yeah we get it Victor!! We know what they say about men with big hands!!
Marius feeling proud of Valjean when he faces Patron-Minette like,,, SAME DUDE
Damn Valjean burning his own arm to show that he doesn't fear anything or anyone, weird flex but okay
JUST REACHED THAT WHOLE "do you want my hat" BUSINESS, Javert should do stand-up comedy (and the fact that he's smiling while delivering this terrible joke!!! Mr Javert sir!! Stop!)
Gotta love Valjean and Javert's weird flexes
MAIS ENFIN JAVERT featuring yet another mention of Javert's enormous hands
Oh, no, my h e a rt, Enjolras accusing Grantaire of believing in nothing and Grantaire replying "I believe in you" pls stop
GRANTAIRE WHISPERING INTO ENJOLRAS' EAR "DON'T WORRY" this is love lads
Javert not remembering Marius' name lmao, poor Marius, everyone thinks he's an idiot (which, okay, fair)
We love a good ol' foreshadowing
Right after foreshadowing Javert's suicide, Hugo keeps explaining how Marius is losing himself to fantasies about pursuing and finding the love of his life, Cosette, which can also be paralleled both Javert and Valjean's relationship. In this essay, I will--
Valjean keeps doing this thing where he literally doubts his own happiness and decides he doesn't deserve anything good in life
MEET ME IN THE PIT VICTOR
Also the fact that he's terrified to go outside!! And is constantly sad!! Dear Mr Victor Hugo, I don't care you've been dead for more than a century now, I hate you. Cordially,
"il lui était resté juste assez d'âpreté pour assaisonner sa bonté ; c'était un esprit rude et un cœur doux"
Valjean is the softest dad ever
Valjean "never really knew what was a woman's beauty", we stan a gay icon
Victor Hugo, every 2 pages: have I told you how sad Valjean is? Very. He's very sad. Absolutely heartbroken. A depressed wretch. Doesn't believe he deserves any happiness.
Also Victor Hugo: anyway they were finally having a bit of fun with Cosette, AND THEN A CHAIN GANG APPEARED
The fact that Valjean is so Strong™ he's barely in a state of shock when Montparnasse attacks him, does not even cry out and immediately pins the youngster with a knee is so fucking funny to me? AND THEN he immediately starts to admonish him abt his lifestyle??
God, to follow the whole chain gang thing (btw Valjean most probably has PTSD) with Montparnasse is such a stake-in-the-heart kind of feeling. Having to face such traumatic memories and then hearing a youth who choses to steal instead of working and isn't even
Bothered to pretend he's not doing it for fun while he, Valjean, stole a loaf of bread (which, in the end, he lost along the way) to feed his starving family composed of seven children and thus spent 19 years of his life in Toulon...!
I know I'm always making fun of what I'm reading but I'm only doing it to cope with the sheer EMOTIONS this book exudes like. I'd spend my days RANTING otherwise.
I just want Jean Valjean to be happy- *froths at the mouth*
Re: Valjean and Montparnass, and after all of this, Valjean still has the kindness to warn Montparnasse about what's gonna happen to him AND he gives him money, this man is too good
Valjean burst out laughing in the brick,,,, finally some good fucking food
I'm reading the whole Marius and Cosette encounter in the garden at night while Bluebird by Alexis Ffrench plays in Spotify, this is the most romantic shit ever
Victor Hugo really was like "I know slang!!" and wrote an entire dialogue with only slang words,,, same vibe as your parents trying to do memes and send them to you
Hugo, about Valjean: he never felt romantic love for anyone
Also Hugo, a hundred pages later: the man who's never been in love and never said sweet nothings to his sweetheart is an idiot and wicked man
Why you gotta do this to Jean Valjean what did he do to you
Gavroche taking care of two lost kids and turns out they're his own brothers,,,, and the fact that he never sees them again after taking care of them for one night
It's okay i didn't need my heart anyway
M. MABEUF !! BECAME SO LOST AND POOR HE'S NOW PART OF THE REBELLION
WHY MUST ALL GOOD, KIND AND AFFECTIONATE CHARACTER ALL END UP SO MISERABLE (looking at Jeanjean)
Victor Hugo really be like mmmh let me mention this VERY TALL WITH HUGE HANDS mysterious character that just appeared at the barricade, who on earth could it be?
All of us: binch we know it's Javert
My god, Grantaire is Pining™. Sadly drinking wine and muttering to himself that he's disappointed Enjolras didn't ask for him instead of Bossuet-
Me: already dying bc of the barricade boys even tho nothing happened yet
@_Safronia_, being the goblin she is:

#icanhearyoulaughfromhere
Fellas is it gay to say to Freedom personified that you believe in in him and looking upon him with tender eyes and asking of him to let you sleep near him until you die (Grantaire is so in love someone send help)
I'm in love with one (1) man and his name is Javert
(no okay I'm lying, sorry jeanjean, I also love you deeply)
Marius deciding to go to the barricade to die bc he won't see Cosette anymore, I'm sorry who let this child roam free???
Hugo: no one dared put the revolutionary flag back for it meant they'd be shot to death
Me: *relieved sigh*
Also Hugo: hey remember that poor, sweet old man M. Mabeuf that you completely forgot until now?
My stupid brain, taking ten (10) seconds to understand: O H N O
OMG MARIUS JUST SAVED THE DAY OKAY I LOVE YOU MARIUS
Javert is being a Regal Bitch™ and I'm living for it
Hugo: so Bahorel and Mabeuf are dead and Jehan was taken prisoner, and that's only the beginning :)
Me:
Aaaand Prouvaire just died screaming Vive la France vive l'avenir, my favourite barricade boy, I'm fine,
The sun is out, it's warm outside and the birds are singing, what a fine morning to gO BACK READING ABOUT EVERYONE DYING AT THE BARRICADE
Valjean and Cosette had their first fight ever and the way it's described 😭 both being unyielding to the point of not speaking to one another when we know as readers that they have so little time left together
The fact that Valjean's constantly described as finding sometimes ugly surroundings and clothing "charming" is so endearing and heartbreaking. After all he has known, the true ugliness of men and poverty alike, it really reads like he can't help it but find things beautiful
Victor Hugo, pointing at Valjean: sad! Much Soft!! Very affection!! Wow
Also Victor Hugo, pointing at Javert: tall stinky bastard man
Oh god, Valjean being content with Cosette and only Cosette in his life, wherever she is he'd follow and Hugo following it with a "he didn't realise that the reverse was not true"
The complexity of these characters, dear lord... The fact that Valjean never really outgrew his possessive strike (and I mean, who wouldn't get possessive of what little happiness they finally encounter in life when they've been robbed of it for nearly 50 years)
And instead decided that he had to give up Cosette for her to be happy and then decided that his life was not worth living anymore... And it's even more complex than that since it's also linked to his depression/PTSD--
"and of all the tortures he lived through, the thought of losing Cosette was worst of all" [insert this is fine meme here again]
OH GOD the symbolism of Jean Valjean finding Love with a capital L, and selflessness through Cosette and then, when he realises she's in love with Marius, finds that Hatred and selfishness had never left his mind *clenches chest*
