Hi! If you’re reading this, it may be because I said “OK TERF” on one of your posts. Some things to know:
1) “TERF” is a description of people who do or say bigoted things about trans people. It applies to men, women, and even gender non-conforming bigots.
2) It’s not a slur.
Slurs require three things to be true about them to be slurs: they must describe something intrinsic to someone’s identity, they must elevate the user over the target in social power, and they must be derogatory. “TERF” is definitely derogatory, 1 of 3 there.
Does calling you a TERF elevate me above you? That’s disputable. Some people dislike bigotry and people who are called bigots. Others like them. Let’s give that one half a point; 1.5/3.
Does it describe something intrinsic about you? No, not at all. “TERF” is not an identity any more than “racist” or “fascist” would be. You can stop doing or saying TERF things and still be yourself and live your life. No points for that. 1.5/3 stands.
Yes, it’s derogatory as mentioned before. It’s meant to derogate. And it may make people feel bad to know that they’ve been called TERFs. But it isn’t a slur any more than “fascist” or “racist” is. And generally societies are better when bigots feel bad acting bigoted openly.
So in conclusion, OK TERFs.
PS: if you are a TERF, you’re probably thinking, “I can report this as hate speech!” Which, you can. But you won’t be the first to think so. As explained above, TERF is not a slur, so reporting me won’t get you what you want. But I will post screenshots of the rejection notices.
Once again, in conclusion, OK TERFs.
PPS. Yes, I do report if I think I should, and sometimes they get suspended. I don’t really care what you think your free speech rights are here. Twitter is public-accessible, but not really a public resource. It’s privately owned and has rules. Don’t like it, tough. So OK TERFs.
Wow, I’m starting to get some international traffic here. I’ll consider working on translations of this, because so many people seem to have highly valuable opinions about it. Until then, va bene/ oke TERF.
