I realised I should’ve made a thread where I talk about Hershel. Buddy boy is once again ok with sleeping downstairs and didnt bork when I went into the bathroom.
This is now the Hershel thread
I haven't quite worked out why it's ok sometimes and other times it's not. Mostly it would be due to over excitement and the whole exiting kitchen situation.
I’m still learning a lot about him and trying to teach him a lot of things. Like establishing safe places for him (which is usually his bed) and for the most part he goes to those places when he’s unsure about what’s happening.
There are triggers for him like small dogs/ terries where he gets tense greeting them. He’s also not the best greeter as he rushes towards the dog. I do my best to redirect him away to give other dog space so it’s a positive interaction.
The door closing and the squeaky gate are another trigger, so we will work to desensitise to those sounds. Like I’ve done with some dog noises.
But guess what... he’s really good at work, no one believes me that he can be an (s)ass at home.
Today Hershel was once again good indoors but nothing can compete against him sniffing around outside. Well... I need to up the reward from chicken to... I don't even know. He's not even interested in food. Just smell.
He still hasn't connected the word to action yet despite multiple repetitions, so Sit is a hit a miss. Down works 80% lured. He hasn't figured out he needs to touch my fingers and not eat it for Touch. (week 3)
He is however very good at settling down when I'm working/ at the desk. Generally behaving indoors. And I'm fairly confident in his toilet habits. Still the best cuddly couch dog.
He is bored. Let me drink my tea in peace, we will go outside and let you be a sniffing lunatic in due time.
Another training session today. Hershel def regresses a bit with Down from lured to hand cue back to needing to be lured. But we are working on it! I tried to reinforce playing with toys, but he doesn't seem interested.
Fun fact, we have to start from the beginning all over again moving into a new room. So do that all again once we are outside.
I'm eating food and Hershel chooses to sleep. That or its the violin music. He is pretty solid settling in his bed.
Hershel is a couch potato for now.
Hershel followed me into the dining room, sat on the rug, looked me in the eye and farted. I see our relationship has progressed.
Couch potato dog.
I think I jinxed it. Hershel refused to settle today (he might have needed to poop...) now he's being a grumbly demanding needy dog crawling all over me wanting pets.
In the time it took me to write that he stepped all over me and curled up into a dog donut in protest of no pets.
When his ears go up he looks like an oversized Terrier.
Grinded Hershel’s nails down. He just has awkward feet... Also Hershel likes to go into the backyard for sniffy times.
Someone just wants to sleep in bed.... *sigh* we had a good week
Sigh.......... I must be strong
I caved. I mean he did the craziest zoomies and I just want to sleep x.x
Is it the full moon, what is it?! Hershel just randomly let out a bark, look up there's nothing but he's on high alert.
So I basically yawned a few times and sighed (to say I'm not worried) and he just plonked his head down with a thud.
Discovering that Hershel needs his sniffy times in the yard. Where I stand in the cold waiting for him to be done.
Well trying to sleep separated again. Hershel is not really taking it well and whining downstairs. He will be fine.
Hershel noticed I was awake and creeped up to my face.
He borked in the middle of the night and I looked up to see him still dead asleep. Sleep borking dog.
It’s Friday
Does he understand?!
Saw a Hershel doppelgänger from a far. Same size, same colour, similar dots, it was unreal. I was like is this what he looks like to other? I just see him up close all the time.
There just doesn't feel like enough time to work on anything with Hershel x.x I haven't even taught him leave it. But we are working on attention with distractions. Many sessions as he needs the repetition.
He also is a bit reactive towards small terrier-type dogs. I don't blame him, we will work on it. So much of training is not about doing sit/ stay.
Resting Hound face
Who's a good boy this morning?
He's not amused
So... Had a scare, Hershel bolted out the door, and it's usually fine, it's enclosed. He won't come back in so I went to get his leash. Came out, Hershel is not in the front.
Looks over to see he managed to get into the next yard, also luckily enclosed. But he squeezed through these iron bars that I didn't think he would fit through. WTF dog, how?! Going to go find some things to patch that up asap.
Bumping command for inside/ come to the top of the list. He's getting it-ish. He came and squeezed back through the gap when I called and lured him.
Incredibly proud I was able to redirect Hershel when we got stuck in our backyard as the terrier that does not like him was on the prowl
He really thought about it but he didn't bark and I got a few treats in. Good boy learning to focus with distractions.
I'm kinda convinced Hershel likes violin classical music like me. He was a bit wound up from some unknown sound and I'm listening to Sibelius and he's just chilled now. Like asleep chilled.
Buddy boy is going to enjoy me working from home and blasting all kinds of classical music 😅 (maybe or he just hates it so much he doesn't want to be conscious)
Hershel was barking his head off downstairs. This is not a behaviour I encourage. At first it was at the neighbour dog’s barking
And then I came downstairs to this
Good boy didn't bark when I left to find frozen veg. Which is GOOD, but I've done NO specific training but left classical music on for him.
1st day at home, Hershel as developed a habit of jumping up and pawing at my back to get attention. WHY DOG WHY.
Side eye.
