Was just reading up on what happens in an electoral college tie—which is a plausible scenario. My understanding is as follows: Assuming electors vote as their state wants (some don’t have to), it goes to the House. But they don’t vote as individuals, but as state delegations....
Even though there are more Dems than Republicans, Republicans control more state delegations. So Trump would likely win (narrowly). But there a catch: The NEWLY-elected 2020 House be the ones who get to vote.
Another interesting tidbit is that the Senate picks the veep—possibly before the House elects the president. So you could have Amy Klobuchar or Kamala Harris briefly serving as president before she goes on to serve as Trump’s veep. (This is my understanding. I welcome experts!)
(This last scenario would only happen if Dems were to win the Senate—which is within the realm of possibility.)
There are a lot of weird rules we haven’t confronted. For example, it is my understanding that the Vice President presides over non-presidential impeachment trials. What this means (based on my understanding) is that Mike Pence would preside over his own trial...
