I’m taking it upon myself to create a thread reviewing vegan sausages. Starting at the high end, here is what I think of @HeckSausages
Very good option if you are looking for a straightforward replacement for a straightforward sausage. Very meaty, tastes a lot like a bog-standard supermarket own brand sausage, which admittedly might not be what @HeckSausages wanted. Still, 7/10
Next, the @Gosh_Food sage, lentil and black pepper.
These were very tasty, although a little bit "falafel turned sausage" so not as meaty as the Hecks. Good if you are vegan but former vegetarian rather than former carnivore 6.5/10.
Today's #VeganSausage contestant: @WickedHealthy's chorizo style bangers. Not really sure what the deal is but Wicked can only be found in Tesco as far as I know. Often underwhelming.
Immediate thoughts: these things are huge. Here they are compared to a normal vegan sausage
Verdict: very very tasty very good texture very meaty. Or as @HolstaT put it while eating one, “mmhhacchsmrbt” or “I think they’re alright”
Very pleasant surprise, the first 10/10. Well done @WickedHealthy
One advantage of all this social distancing is that you will be getting more of my #vegansausage reviews. This offering from @MeatlessFarm is curious. In some respects very solid flavour, but somewhat unambitious. 7/10
Today's contender: @Tesco own brand plant based sausages. Incredible for their price. Great texture, great flavour, and a really authentic skin that pops as you bite into it. 9/10 #vegansausages
Fans of the greatest thread on twitter will be pleased to learn that the combination of my working from home and having raided @sainsburys means there are going to be some entries this week #vegansausages
OK I have tried the @MMountainsFoods sausage. This company made a big song and dance and their "bleeding burger" which was nice but a bit gimmicky. These sausages are £4.50 for 4 and in the battle for meatiest vegan sausage have real competition
I am afraid to report that they are really not good enough for the price. Nice texture and ok flavour but not as good as any of the other "meaty" vegan sausages. They are big (compared to a normal sausage as pictured) but not worth the price. Avoid. 3/10
Today's contestant: @sainsburys Plant Pioneers Chorizo sausages. These guys have some stiff competition, given that another Chorizo sausage got the first 10 in this thread https://twitter.com/lukemcgee/status/1236607875042234368
While these are not quite up to the extraordinary standard set by Wicked, they are not bad for the price. A little small, you will need three for a competitive hotdog. But decent flavour and texture. V nice in Mexican dishes. 7/10
Today's contender is another @Gosh_Food offering. This time, it's their Smokey Sweet Potato sausages #vegansausages
Ok, so like the previous Gosh sausages, these essentially taste like some other kind of food, but are shaped like sausages. So, flavour actually quite nice and I think we can agree that they look fantastic.
However, when you try and cut into them they fall apart which makes the temptation to smush them up and in my case put them in a bap overwhelming. Overall: 6/10. Loss of marks because they don't behave like sausages.
Today's contender: the first @LindaFoods of the series: the lesser-seen Linconshire sausages. Linda is a long-standing fave of vegans and veggies so hopes are high.
Ok: those who’ve been paying attention will not he surprised to learn that these are very good. I am giving a provisional 8.5. However, it’s possible to ignore the fact that this brand could do better given resources
It’s also impossible to ignore the fact that I *may* have burnt them after getting distracted 🤦😂🔥🚒
Today's contender is the absolutely iconic @LindaFoods outrageously succulent sausages. These have come late because I wanted to remove bias. Longstanding veggies and vegans will have known and loved these for years.
First, background. For some time, these were the only truly reliable vegan sausages (Quorn not vegan) that could be found in shops all over. They taste like the cheap sausages you got in school meals, which made reassured new vegans. Many think this means they deserve a 10
However, this is about taste and how they compare to others. So I am eating them in the way that @HolstaT decided 18 months ago was the only way to truly appreciate them: in servings of 4 with mustard or ketchup. And I'm delighted to say *drumroll* 10/10. Absolute 10s. 10 10 10
Today's contender is a return to the own brands, a competition within itself. Introducing: @Morrisons "Taste".
Given that I'd managed to find a tin of beans, I decided the only reasonable thing to do was make a vegan fry up.
The result is a solid 9/10. These sausages mean business. I can see them being extremely versatile, come summer. Very good effort @Morrisons
Today's contender: following the own-brand theme, here is the @coopuk offering: Sizzlin' Sausages
Here it is next to a Tesco own brand. As you can see, the structural integrity is superior to many of its rivals when it hits the pan.
An overall solid effort. Structural integrity held after cooking which means texture was solid. Good flavour too: very very meaty. 7.5/10
Now then you lucky old things, Saturday night means... it's the moment many of you have been waiting for: @sainsburys Plant Pioneers Cumberland Shroomdogs. The day-in-day-out sausage for all occasions is a crowded field with stiff competition -- not least the 10/10 Linda Ms
Ok, so this is difficult. I personally like them a lot for reasons I’d best not share for decency’s sake, *however* given the category in which they fall, it would be unfair to give them more than a 7. Try them, but also try the others in this group
Today's contender is the final review in this thread (at least for now) and it feels fitting that it's a @LindaFoods chorizo, given the only 10s have been Linda's base sausage and the Wicked chorizo
And in a surprise to absolutely no one, it was a 10. Another staggering effort from the superb, often taken for granted, @LindaFoods
Ladies and gentlemen: My liquid diet has been a failure. While I know many of you will be bitterly disappointed to hear this, please take comfort in the fact that *it's back* Today's contender: @RichmondFoods
I could not be more delighted to restart the thread with such a fine entry. Texture, flavour, gravitas. These are some serious af sausages. 10/10
Another addition to the thread. This time: @marksandspencer steps into the competitive chorizo arena. Plant Kitchen has a pretty good selection of things so I was optimistic...
And yet... high hopes dashed. These are distinctly average and don't deserve your time or money. Poor texture, no attempt at artificial skin. All in all, a terrible sausage experience. 2/10. Booooo hissssss bboooooo
