Race vs ethnicity vs nationality be kicking y’all ass
Every quote reply to this tweet just proves my point 😂😂😂😂
Let me give y’all an example. As a treat

My race: Black
My ethnicity: Black American/African-American
My Nationality: American (born in the USA)
This is within the US context where these three things exist. Obviously the concept of race and ethnicity isn’t the same (sometimes doesn’t even exist) outside of the US. Have a good night
Imma define these for y’all tomorrow but I’m about to go out and get drunk so y’all can wait one more day 😂
Um i just woke up and i see y’all felt this one. So let me give an explanation. BUT FIRST WE NEED THE AUDIENCE TO FOLLOW THE ACCOUNT
First thing’s first (RIP uncle Phil) ALL THIS SHIT IS SOCIALLY CONSTRUCTED Aka made tf up to create division and put certain groups(white) over others. And like i said this is in a US context. I’m aware that these don’t exist/aren’t defined the same in other countries.
Let’s start with the easy one. You nationality (NATION-ality) is the country you were born in. That is NOT the same as your country of origin. I know it’s confusing but that’s what it is
For example: my nationality is American(USA) because i was born here. My country of origin is unknown because of slavery so i don’t know where my family is from. So again, nationality, the NATION, you come from
Race: THIS IS MADE UP but still has real life consequences on how we are perceived and treated(racism, we’ll come back to this). Race is not biological. This has been proved scientifically so many times. Genetic trends (like predisposition to certain diseases)....
what is Race? It’s a way to categorize people based primarily on skin color. Some examples include(based on the US census): Black, white, Asian, Alaskan native, Native Hawaiian, Native American. It was created as a way to divide human groups and then create social hierarchies
Here’s a detailed Wikipedia article on the history of race creation. There’s a lot more to learn than this but it’s a start. You’re welcome https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Historical_race_concepts#Johann_Friedrich_Blumenbach
Let’s recap. My nationality is American 🥴. My race is Black (capitalize the B!)
Example: for Europeans, in Europe you may be defined by your nationality and that’s it(possibly ethnicity) correct me if I’m wrong. But when you come to the US your race is WHITE. It’s technically white in Europe too because you can’t just turn your race off.
I’m sorry to have to be the one to break it to you but stop saying “I’m not white I’m Italian” You’re white
I’m going to explain ethnicity first then define racism at the end because i know a lot of y’all don’t understand that either 😔
It’s hella typos please ignore them i promise i can spell 😭 also I’m not perfect so definitely do your own research. This is complicated stuff that I’m simplifying a LOT
Ethnicity: This is about CULTURE. It’s a social group that shares commonalities and traditions. It can be based on shared history, language and dialect, location/geographic region, music, art, beliefs, values, etc
Examples: Black American, Jamaican, Italian, Irish, Yoruba
My ethnicity is Black American/African American. Every Black American is Black(race) but every Black person(race) is not African American(ethnicity). A lot of y’all who think you aren’t black because of your ethnicity.... anyway my ethnicity is my cultural group basically
Another example: when Italians and Irish people immigrated to the US they weren’t originally considered white(race). They were “non-white immigrants” but they were tired of being discriminated against so you know what they did?
“Exchanged” their Irish/Italian identity for whiteness and collaborated with the dominant white culture to discriminate against African Americans for power and social status 🙂 y’all should look this up. There was a great thread on here about it. Anyway let’s continue on
Okay let’s recap again.
My nationality: American
Race: Black
Ethnicity: Black American (WE ARE OUR OWN DISTINCT ETHNIC GROUP WITH HISTORY, TRADITIONS, AND CULTURE WHICH YALL LOVE TO STEAL)
Nationality: the nation where you come from (I’m going to say where you were born/mostly lived)
Race: Socially constructed category based primarily on skin color. NOT BIOLOGICAL
Ethnicity: your social and cultural group. Connected to each other through traditions, history, etc
Don’t feel bad if you didn’t understand this. It’s confusing and again made up so really kind of pointless but since it actually impacts how we’re treated in society you should know this
Okay last thing. I’m going to define racism because we can’t talk about this without doing it. I know I’m about to lose some of you but just hold on a little longer
Racism vs prejudice vs discrimination. These three things are not the same. That’s a whole other thread that i don’t feel like doing
When you were just trying to get a joke off and now you gotta explain shit
The google definition has the racism is just discrimination based on race/skin color but it’s so much more than that. It’s based on POWER. It’s based on systems of oppression(systemic racism), institutions (institutional racism, such as Jim Crow Laws), and individual racism
It’s a system where white people hold societal power over non-white people(Black, indigenous, Asian, Latinx) simply based on race. It’s where white people believe their race is superior (see white supremacy) to other races based on fake biological differences
This is where white privilege comes in. Every single white person has white privilege. Regardless of sexuality, socioeconomic status, etc. you can be poor, gay, a woman, but if you’re white you STILL HAVE WHITE PRIVILEGE. Privilege is UNEARNED advantages based on race.
I’m not even going to go into detail about all this because google is free but if you’re white you have white privilege. If you are white passing (light enough to pass for white and get the benefits of being white) you also have white privilege
I’m going to need y’all to read this multiple times. BLACK PEOPLE CANNOT BE RACIST. “Reverse racism” DOES NOT EXIST. Racism requires societal power. White people have NEVER been systematically oppressed because of their race. You have never experienced racism.
Minorities can be prejudice and discriminate against others but they cannot be racist. Also internalized racism is a thing, please look it up
And on that note, I’m out. I hope this has been helpful. I’m still learning. Google stuff. Read a book(please I’m begging you) unlearn all the shit we’ve been taught. Support Black women. Climate change is real! Send me a dollar(or a million). Bye ✌🏾
I’m about to drop these because last time my tweet went viral y’all actually sent me money and ya girl got student loans
