In my neck of the woods we get these gnarly fire ant mounds that pop up every year. And these buggers are MEAN! They swarm, they bite, they burn and they're invasive.
Once we discover a mound, there are hours of fun to be had in destroying every last one of these little Monsters. I know you have all done this...
One of my favorite methods is the pouring of molten aluminum down the mound and then digging up a rad ant hill sculpture...(I would like one for my office if you're wondering what to get me for my birthday this year)...
As satisfying as it is to end the life of such an invasive and destructive little spawn of hell, the futility of such an endeavor is quickly realized when you wake up, go admire your handiwork and realize that these ants Just. Keep. Coming....

Because deep in the colony, lies this queen with a seeming unlimited supply of eggs. As quickly as you can stomp, fry, drown or blow up one of her workers, she can hatch 10 more...
And when you attack the mound, she has soldiers that carry her off to safety to rebuild the colony on the other side of your yard. The cycle continues.
Unless you kill the queen, the cycle will always continue...

So it is with us and our insecurities.
People with a constant need for affirmation, people who fish for compliments by saying things like "ugh, I'm so ugly" or "I'm just no good at this" etc. are simply sending forth their worker ants...

The insecurity is a deep seated queen, not easily destroyed. The evidence of her existence is the affirmation black hole.
And you, well meaning sir cares-a-lot, are just taking a magnifying glass to these little worker ants when you try to meet that affirmation need...

The ants arent the problem, and squishing them isnt the solution, and yet, so many of us are busy doing just that, day in and day out, and wondering why it isn't working

These "affirmation black holes" have a very deep dwelling queen belief that tells them they suck, they're not good enough, theyll never matter to those they love, and in their best efforts to feel better, they send forth the solicitation workers for a temporary reprieve...
They think that if they just find the right person, receive institutional affirmation, or are granted special privileges then FINALLY theyll feel accepted and loved.
Unless any of the above also include killing the queen, the problem will be back tomorrow.
