For many years I’ve been subscribed to Discworld Monthly, featuring news and events relating to Terry Pratchett's universe. In their February newsletter they published a self-described rant from a reader, which was so filled with ignorance and hatred, that I unsubscribed.
Given how Terry Pratchett railed against ignorance and hate in his books, not least through his characters in the Night Watch, I find it even more disgusting that they chose to publish the letter. It contained transphobia, misogyny and body-shaming. And they published it.
I’ve made editorial decisions in the past, so I know they weren't forced to do it. There was only one entry in the “readers letters” section this month, and it was that hate-filled diatribe, ironically about a writer’s creation that specifically spoke against hate. No thank you.
