Specific note for the brits: taking compliments is the most unbritish thing, and doubly so if you're at all anxious, so really is actively worth being prepared for. I say my line and try and move the conversation on.
It gets increasingly important if you come into contact with Americans, who culturally don't do this nearly as much.
I had my "I need to be better at this moment" around 2009 when I first met a major american creator who said "I'm loving your work" and I said "Well, someone has to" and saw instantly the offence.
