Ronaldinho and his brother have been arrested for entering Paraguay with fake passports.

His fake passport shows his correct name, birthplace, and birthdate, but it falsely suggests that he’s a naturalized Paragauay citizen. [ @Santula]
Ronaldinho had his passport confiscated by the Brazilian government in November 2018 for building a sugar mill with a fishing platform and a pier on Lake Guaíba without permission.

After failing to pay the $2.3m ordered by the government, he had his passport confiscated.
Ronaldinho and his brother, who helped construct the mill, were taken to court, and it was found that Ronaldinho only had $6.59 in his bank account.

For this reason, he was unable to pay the fine, thus, unable to recover his passport, thus, unable to leave Brazil.
The dumbest part of all this? As my colleague @RobertoRojas97 mentions, Brazilian citizens don’t even need passports to enter Paraguay.

Due to their status as a Mercosur country, Brazilian citizens can enter Paraguay with a simple Brazilian identity card.
The prosecutors have ordered Ronaldinho to remain in police custody at the hotel for the night.

Tomorrow, he will be transferred to the prosecutor’s office, along with his brother, to testify.
Another example of cruel irony tonight:

Under Jair Bolsonaro’s direction, Ronaldinho was named as Brazil’s new Tourism Ambassador in September.

He helped promote the government’s “Rei do Rolê” initiative, which encouraged tourists to submit their videos about visiting Brazil.
After the main public events of the day were completed, the police went to the hotel they were staying at and detained Ronaldinho and his brother.

They also detained Wilmondes Sousa Lira, who provided them with fake documentation

They will testify at 8 a.m. local time tomorrow.
The cruelest irony of this entire night, for me, is this:

Ronaldinho went to Paraguay to promote his biography, “Gênio em vida,” or “Genius in life.”

That’s the heartbreaking story of Ronaldinho: a genius on the pitch ruined by his career-debilitating decisions off the pitch.
According to Paraguay’s Interior Minister Euclides Acevedo, Ronaldinho applied for the fake passport a month ago.

Both Ronaldinho and his brother are cooperating with the authorities and will testify tomorrow morning.

Article 246 of Paraguay’s penal code states:

“Anyone who produces or uses an unauthentic documentation with the intention of tricking with legal authorities will be punished with a custodial sentence up to 5 or with a fine.”
Of course, if you’re the Paraguayan police, you can’t arrest Ronaldinho without getting a picture with Ronaldinho first.
Both Ronaldinho and his brother said that they were given Paraguayan documents as soon as they got off the plane "as a gift."

So basically, their story is that Wilmondes Sousa Lira tricked them into using fake passports.
Despite having his Brazilian and Spanish passports confiscated in 2018, Ronaldinho managed to go on a ‘world tour.’

He went to Nairobi to help promote a Kenyan casino, but he also travelled to Japan, France and Morocco.
After cooperating with police, Ronaldinho was freed today on the impression that he had been tricked by others.

While Ronaldinho has since been liberated, two women have been arrested in conjunction with the investigation: María Isabel Gayoso and Esperanza Apolonia Caballero.
Ronaldinho has been ordered by a judge to pay the family of Clovis Juárez Klein $32,000.

Klein died after being electrocuted while working on a property that was owned by Ronaldinho and his brother.

The judge ruled that the property breached basic health and safety standards.
Klein was fatally shocked in January 2010 when he was installing metallic structures on the property.

As a result of faulty wiring, Ronaldinho will have to pay his family a third of his net monthly income until his children turn 25 years old.
Ronaldinho’s prison five-a-side team won the tournament with an 11-2 victory in the Final. The Brazilian scored 5 goals and assisted the other six.

As a prize, he and the rest of his teammates will enjoy a 16 kg smoked pig.
After the teams battled each other to sign him and after a police officer lent him his shoes to play, it was agreed upon that Ronaldinho could not score goals in any game.

Then again, if your name is Ronaldinho, rules don’t apply (unless you enter Paraguay with a fake passport).
According to prison warden Blas Vera, Ronaldinho has seen his spirits boosted in the past few days, going to the courtyard and talking to his fellow inmates.

He has grown accustomed to drinking coffee, as well.

We really need a Netflix documentary at this point.
After it was speculated that Lionel Messi would pay €4 million to bail Ronaldinho out of prison as well as offer him his legal team, Messi’s entourage has firmly denied these rumors.

While Messi laments Ronaldinho’s situation, he is upset at these fake reports of paying bail.
16 years ago, Ronaldinho celebrated his 24th birthday by scoring an 89’ goal against Real Sociedad to lift Barcelona to victory.

Today, he celebrates his 40th birthday in a prison in Paraguay.
Ronaldinho playing beach volleyball in prison whilst the rest of the world watches from their quarantine/lockdown.

God really does work in mysterious ways.
Aside from playing sports with his fellow inmates, Ronaldinho is also taking a carpentry course.
Ronaldinho sends a message to the family members of Pablo Moraes, his attacking partner who plays in his prison five-a-side team.

"I am here with my mate, my striker, Pablo. He plays very well and we are together. Soon we will play together again."
While Ronaldinho's prison sentence was expected to last up to 6 months, there is a chance he could be released after just a month.

He and his brother will meet with Judge Gustavo Amarillo in 2 hours for a sentencing review hearing. He could be freed this week. [ @carlinortega]
After 32 days in prison, Ronaldinho and his brother have been released after paying bail.

However, they will remain under house arrest in their Paraguayan hotel.
Ronaldinho’s legal team met with police in Asunción’s Hotel Palmaroga today.

The lawyers Sergio Queiroz and Adolfo Marin paid $1.6 million ($8.37 million Reais) via their client’s account.
The prosecutors agreed to the conditions presented by his lawyers, with their only request being that Ronaldinho and his brother remain under police custody at the hotel.

As such, they will remain in Paraguay, where they have been since March 4.
The legal team had previously met with prosecutors on three occasions to secure house arrest and/or liberty, but were rejected.

As today proved, fourth time’s the charm.
Ronaldinho is escorted to his hotel, where he will stay in Room 104.

He will have 24/7 police custody.
According to ESPN sources, Ronaldinho’s inmates were in tears as they bade farewell to the Brazilian. As a parting gift, they bequeathed him and his brother with a barbecue.

I don’t have a picture, so you’ll have to imagine it as something like this.
