I don’t know how Drogba has become one of the most underrated strikers on this platform. But it’s actually happened. Too many kids and stat merchants. The game is gone. Going to breakdown every Drogba season with us, and prove how underrated he’s become. (A thread)
04/05 - Where it all begun. We win our first league title in 50 years. Aswell as a league cup, kept 25 CLEAN SHEETS and concede a PL record of 15 GOALS in a full PL season. Drogba scored 10 and assisted 5 in 26 PL games. + A goal in the league cup final. 15 G/A in 26 PL games.
05/06 - He then follows it up scoring 12 goals and 11 assists in only 29 PL appearances. Leading us to back to back PL titles. That’s 23 G/A in 29 appearances.
06/07 - (PART 1) He then scored 20 goals, backed up by 4 assists in 36 games and lead us to a close second in which we lost the chance of a 3peat to Man United by 6 points. He also had 9 G/A in 12 UCL games in which we reached semis. 24 G/A in 36 PL games.
06/07 - (PART 2) Also lead us to the Carling Cup that year after scoring both goals in a 2-1 win over Arsenal.
06/07 - (PART 3) Despite us falling short in the league to United, we didn’t fall short in the FA CUP to them. Drogba scored the only goal in extra time to lead us to a 1-0 win in final. To help us complete a domestic cup double.
07/08 - He had a serious knee injury which lead him to need surgery and miss over two months of football. Still managed 8 goals and 5 assists in only 19 games. Also scored 6 in 11 in the UCL too. But PL alone, 13 G/A in 19 games.
08/09 - (PART 1) Another injury ridden season. Returned a month into the season after his knee injury, only to injure it again in October, and be out for over 5 weeks. A very stop start season, only managed 15 starts. (24 apps total) 5 goals and 4 assists. 9 G/A in 15 PL starts.
08/09 - (PART 2) Despite another injury ridden season. Mr Wembley, as he often does, showed up in another final, scoring the opener, and lead us to our 5th FA Cup trophy.
09/10 - COME THE FUCK OUTSIDE. Peak Drogba. Carlo ball in full flow, (first attacking manager Drogba played under) No injuries. 29 GOALS AND 10 ASSISTS. Leading us to our 3rd PL title and FA cup double. An ALL TIME GREAT PL season. Harry Kane who? Dkm. 39 G/A in 32 appearances.
10/11 - Not the same killer he was the previous season, he still managed 11 goals, and an extremely impressive 13 ASSISTS in which we came 2nd to United (again). Not at his previous scoring heights of 09/10, but still 24 G/A in 36 appearances. Extremely underrated.
11/12 - Passed his peak. Generally a tragic domestic campaign for us in which we finished 7th. Drogba scored 5 goals in 16 PL starts (24 apps). BUT WHEN THE LIGHTS WERE BRIGHTEST. ALL THE ODDS AGAINST US, HE DELIVERED THE GREATEST NIGHT IN THE HISTORY OF CHELSEA FOOTBALL CLUB. 💙
14/15 - Won’t go into too much depth here as he was clearly passed his best at this stage, was only brought back to be a back up to Diego Costa. Still scored 4 goals in only 8 starts including goals against United and Spurs. Contributing to our 14/15 title success.
9 goals, in 9 finals. 5 of them being match winners. Built for the biggest stage, that’s shit you cannot teach.
Also, 3 seasons of 10+ assists? Shows how complete he was. But because he’s not Brazilian and doesn’t have Roberto in his name, people allow themselves to believe all he ever was, was a goal scorer, Lmao. Has certain defensive strikers ever had 10 PL assists in a single season?
Don’t believe he was an amazing player outside of being a goal scorer? Take a look for yourself then. https://twitter.com/Hustler_Futbol/status/1027978913228644352
Last point I’ll make. Besides 09-11 under Carlo, (no coincidence his best ssn was 09/10) Drogba was part of elite defensive systems, for most of his Chelsea career. He was never going to score 30 goals, playing in peak Jose’s 15 PL goals conceded side. Kids will never understand.
I’m not gonna come here and act like Drogba is the best #9 to ever grace the PL, and there are of course strikers who have better scoring records. But if it wasn’t for the knee injuries between 07-09, he probably would have had at least two more 20+ seasons.
There are better all time PL strikers for sure. Henry, Sheerer, Rooney etc. But in terms of overall impact, dominance, goal scoring, ability. There aren’t many better than Drogba. And somehow he’s become severely underatted on here. Crazy really.
Names like Harry Kane being mentioned in the same sentence, who’s won absolutely jack shit, and bottled every big moment he’s ever been in, you know. Have some damn respect.
