We learned so much from the referral program at @MomSights thought I& #39;d share with my FIRST tweet thread ever. Get excited https://abs.twimg.com/emoji/v2/... draggable="false" alt="🙌" title="Raising hands" aria-label="Emoji: Raising hands">
1. Incentivize. We made the incentive $5 Target gift cards because moms love Target. Target also had an easy-to-use partner program that made distributing electronic gift cards super easy. Moms were only paid when their friend completed a research study, so $5 CAC made sense.
2. Personalize. We added a short "personal note" moms could include to their friend. This increased referral conversion. Moms would write "Lisa, my sister said this company was legit so I thought I& #39;d try out. And who doesn& #39;t love Target and surveys lol".
3. Reach new audiences. Referrals are a great way to expand your target audience. We grew our dad panel almost entirely from referrals. Again with a personal note, "Hey hubby, you have to do this. It literally takes 2 minutes. LOVE YOU!"
4. Fraudsters are inevitable. Although time-consuming, referrals were a good way to identify potentially fraudulent members.
5. Invest in your referral system. We hacked together a referral program bc there was no budget. As the panel and number of studies grew, it became more difficult to track. If I did it over as an early startup, I would use a cheap software provider with zapier integration.
6. Ask and repeat! Capture the excitement and attention of new users and immediately ask for referrals. Include reminders. We asked for up to 5 referrals right after a mom finished signing up and then again in the welcome email.
