Folks dealing with the Nashville tornado, I have some advice (from someone who works in the insurance industry AND I lost my home to a tornado in 2013).

cont..
If you've sustained damage, file a homeowners / renters claim immediately! This will get the process started in order to "make you whole".

If you suffered a "total loss", please take pictures of what you have or find old pictures of the inside of your house. (cont.)
This will save you a lot of time on the back end, trust me!

Keep your receipts of when you eat out. You can submit for reimbursement.

Keep all your receipts for housing, emergency clothes, etc..
My wife and I had to go to Wal-Mart to buy underwear and socks...we literally had nothing after the tornado.

Keep in contact with your claims adjuster or a point of contact at your insurance company.
If you feel like the adjuster or the insurance company is dragging their feet or seem to be unhelpful, give your State Insurance Department a call!

If that doesn't work, lawyer up!
