Mr Fosu, 31, died at Harmondsworth detention in 2012. He was found naked without bedding in soiled cell. He had been suffering from psychosis. Malnutrition, dehydration & hypothermia contributed to death. There was no evidence he had eaten, drunk or slept over his six days there.
He was arrested by police as he ran down road naked. A check found he had overstayed his visa. Despite police concerns, a mental health assessment concluded he was fit to be detained, and on 24 October 2012 he was transferred to immigration detention. He died there a week later.
Because *obviously* if a man is running naked on the road, the first thing that should happen in a civilised society is an immigration check and then immediately detain them indefinitely for the purposes of deportation. Then keep them in isolation, naked and alone.

Neglect and series of gross failures by Home Office and others contributed to the death of vulnerable detainee from hypothermia, dehydration and malnutrition. In detention he was found ranting into a mirror. He was restrained and put into segregation where he died six days later.
"In a damning narrative conclusion, jury found Mr Fosu died suddenly after developing these conditions while suffering from psychotic illness. The jury criticised many aspects of the healthcare in detention & said there were “gross failures across Home Office and other agencies”.
To everyone asking what will happen to the Home Office and other people who treated him this way - what charges they will face etc.

I'm not being patronising, but don't be silly.

I wouldn't be surprised if they've been promoted several times since, living their happy lives.
But also, no point punishing low-level staff anyway. This is the culture in Home Office and its contractors. The people in their 'care' aren't humans. They're "immigrants" and "detainees" and "subjects". A subhuman class that has to be mistreated and tortured to make them comply.
They're all liars, even when telling the truth. They're all criminals, even if they don't have criminal records. They're all cheats, even when being honest.

They have to be abused & humiliated to punish them & to deter others. Let a few detainees die and others become compliant.
Don't expect any change, unless we completely dismantle Home Office and shut all immigration detention centres as we know them. Entire system is rotten. Questioning or even punishing few individuals will change nothing. We need drastic change if we are to make the system humane.
Not just one person who was negligent or incompetent or poorly-trained etc.

How many people failed to act humanely? How many refused to treat him as a human? How many thought he deserved to be treated this way?

All of them. Because that is how they are trained to think.
The scandal is not just he was naked when he died, or that the room was filthy & soiled, or that he did not have any bedding.

The scandal is not even just a mentally-unwell person in detention.

The scandal is thousands of people without criminal records locked up indefinitely.
No one knows what happens in immigration detention, because only people who can tell us are detainees. But they are immigrants so cannot be trusted or believed.

BBC undercover investigation found "chaos, violence & abuse" & "a toxic, brutal environment". https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/resources/idt-sh/g4s_brook_house_immigration_removal_centre_undercover
And, who is responsible for the welfare of immigration detainees? Whose job is it to ensure the Home Office and its contractors do not treat detainees like animals? Who is there to look out for these vulnerable, indefinitely-imprisoned people who don't all speak English? Anyone?
We have Independent Monitoring Boards but, honestly, do they serve any real purpose? What do they do besides walking around detention centres?

Do they understand what happens in detention?

Do detainees know about them? Do detainees talk to them? *Can* detainees talk to them?
Lots I wanted to say about IMBs.

They're almost all white.

Almost all elderly.

Very few speak second language.

Very few have any understanding of immigration or immigrants.

But then I remembered this thread from 2017 which said some of these things: https://twitter.com/ShoaibMKhan/status/917818314612723713
Of 73 Independent Monitoring Board members at immigration detention centres of known ethnicity, 7 Asians, 1 black. 56 white.

And we assume immigration detainees will confide in them? IMB members may as well be detention officers as far as detainees are concerned.
