Swine flu killed 12,469 people in the US from mid 2009 to mid 2010. Do you recall market meltdowns and OMG coverage of it daily? I don't. Globally a few hundred thousand people died. 2009 was the start of an economic recovery yet now we are potentially having an economic plunge.

Swine Flu killed on average 34 people a day from April 2009 to April 2010 per the CDC. Basically, three days of Swine Flu had more DEATHS than the total current #CoronaVirus cases in the US. Can Corona get worse than current levels? Sure but it is not anywhere close to it.

Coronavirus is not anywhere close to Swine Flu levels so I am not sure why people are spreading panic about it. Even if it reaches those levels, there was no OMG WE ARE DYING tone in mid 2009 during Swine. The economy in fact got out of a recession mid 2009 despite Swine Flu!

Even if #Coronavirus can be worse than the regular or swine flu it makes no sense to create panic when the the world is many millions of cases away from it. The world economy would freeze if the regular flu is treated in media a fraction the way Corona is. #BePreparedNotPanicked.

Manufacturing in Feb rose (50 or above means a rise. It is 50.1) and it is better than half of 2019, but you would think the opposite from reading Jeffrey's tweet. This is economic panic-spreading which can lead to an actual slowdown. (BTW, Jeff is usually careful.) #COVID19

Days ago, Iran's #CoronaVirusDeathRate was above 7% but they are reporting more cases now so the death rate is down to 3.29% (77 deaths from 2,336 cases). Indeed, it's still a very high percent but there are not enough #CoronaVirus cases (there or globally) to know the real rate.

Now is two + weeks since Corona reached many countries. Current #CoronaVirusDeathRate:

3.83% in China

2.49% Iran

3.96% Italy

1.98% Spain

1.97% Global (without China)

1.68% France

1.30% Japan

0.68% S Korea

Those countries have 101,356 (95.5%) of the global 106,065 cases.

This thread by @LizSpecht imagines that no one who is infected will recover; that most infected will need hospitalization and all at the same time. But only 770 #Coronavirus cases outside of China are listed as critical. That's 3.03% of non-China 25,369 cases. #CoronaVirusPanic!

#CoronaVirusPanic: Person A has Corona. 1,000 people self quarantine. After 14 days they leave. Go to an event where Person B has it. Now they all quarantine again??? There is no vaccine for the virus and as far it is known now, it isn't a once-you-have-it-you-don't-get-it-again.

So... How does quarantining non-infected people help? I guess it doesn't really help except maybe if EVERYONE stays home for weeks.

BTW, only a few percent of those tested have Corona. They test only those with symptoms and/or the above-mentioned 1K. Yet infection rate is low.

Koreans were made aware of Corona in late Jan, so masks/sanitizers went up, but the country was not put on hold. CPAC was 11 days ago. No one quarantined until day 9, yet there is no mass contagion from it. The 14 day quarantine window may seem wide. Will it be norrowed to 7-10?

Italy does NOT prove that everyone is getting Corona considering that 99.98% of that country still doesn't have it. But... They were melting-down with only 7K cases and 1K critical. Now THAT's the story! That a developed country can't handle a sudden influx of 1,000 ill seniors!

Why is everyone focused on Italy and not Korea? Focus on both for balance.
