OK friends, it looks like the trail has gone cold for me so I am going to summarise what I've learned about Adriaan Basson and the curious case of the nonexistent NWU Nazis.

I won't link back to all the articles and reports, you can find them in the quoted tweets below. https://twitter.com/psyQologist/status/1232362855036522501
Adriaan Basson decided to dredge up a 6 year old story of how his Beeld team "exposed" a Nazi salute being used at NWU.
This coincided with 2 developments:
De Klerk's foolish comments about Apartheid & its status as a crime against humanity,& Mike Pompeo's condemnation of EWC.
The gist of Basson's thread was that the Unrepentant Whites need to buck up their ideas if they are concerned and serious about the future of SA.

He made sure to link Afrikaners to far right views, which by now is a tired staple of much leftist political analysis in SA.
I tweeted about the Unrepentant White archetype serving as powerful propaganda,& became aware of the video which cast doubts on the veracity of Basson's claims.
From the video it's clear that the photos in the Beeld article were part of a larger routine with no Nazi connotations.
Shocked at the brazenness of this smear on Afrikaners, I did a bit of digging and found out that Basson had a friend who was working at NWU at the time, Hannelie Booyens.
Booyens is a former supporter of the ANC Women's League,& clearly holds far-left views.
Booyens has blogged about the NWU incident,& this left a trail of breadcrumbs which I was able to follow.
I still do not have evidence that she was the "whistleblower" at NWU, nor do I know if she was the person who confronted then rector Prof. Van Schalkwyk with the Nazi photos.
What I do know is that there were questions around Booyen's qualifications,& that she clearly had an axe to grind with NWU.
Unfortunately for her,her blog reads like an attempt to simultaneously cover her tracks while reveling in the outcome of the fallout caused by the "exposé."
Having read the relevant parts of NWU's internal investigations,it seems clear that the university had already taken action to limit aspects of res & student culture which had a militaristic tinge to them BEFORE the Beeld article, demonstrating their commitment to inclusivity.
From what I could tell, Prof. Van Schalkwyk & Dr. Eloff were acting in the interests of students & in good faith.
However, the Dept of Higher Education & Training commissioned the Wessels report, which found no evidence of Nazism but reads like a user manual for "transformation."
The report falsely accused NWU of tacitly approving certain initiation practices, but found no evidence of Nazism.
Still, the report was seized upon by ANC cadres like Lucky Thekisho & Comrade Blade & it served as a Trojan Horse for more aggressive transformation reform.
This whole story has the look of a psyop in retrospect.

Selective information was presented by mainstream media, which came right out of the classic far-left SAn playbook:

Accuse your opponent of protecting Apartheid's Legacy.
Infiltrate the institution.
Seize total control.
Questions still remain:

1. What was Basson's angle in bringing up the story now?
2. What role did his relationship with Booyens play?
3. Was Booyens the "whistleblower" and what was her motivation?
4. Besides furthering the ANC's goals of transformation, who else stands to gain?
Thanks for following me down this rabbit hole.

In the final analysis it could all be worth nothing, but at least there's another perspective on the issue which differs from the one that was rammed down our throats.
