my life w adventure time: a small thread I will now write

AT came out in 2010, when I was 10, aka, the prime audience

we didn’t usually have cable at my house when I was a kid, and when we did have it, my mom was super strict about what I watched
i knew for a fact she wouldn’t approve of adventure time like AT ALL, both bc of the adult humor that got slid in and it’s weirdness

but on weekends I had to go to my grandpa’s house since my mom worked, so every weekend I got the chance to sneak upstairs and watch whatever I wanted in my aunts room where I was unsupervised
meaning. I watched adventure time

i was always super paranoid and made sure to have food network on the “previous channel” button, ready to switch in case I heard my aunt/grandpa coming
it really wasn’t that big a deal, but I liked being a good kid and was terrified of getting in trouble

this unorthodox way of watching adventure time meant I only saw a few random episodes now and then though, and the practice of going to my grandpas regularly stopped due to life events, so before season 2 even came out I had stopped getting regular access to AT

a couple years later I actually ended up moving in with my grandpa, but by then I hadn’t had access to AT in a while. it’s fuzzy, but I know somewhere in there I got a small laptop, like maybe 10 inch display, and whenever I had internet I would fervently search for AT on CN

evicted was my favorite episode bc I was A. Obsessed with vampires and B. in love with Marceline even though I didn’t know I liked girls yet lmao
I had a flip phone with a recording feature, and I remember holding my phone up to the TV to catch the evicted song on my phone

my music taste at the time consisted primarily of owl city and various adventure time songs I had recorded onto my phone from the TV. I was very scared of being found out bc they called Marceline sexy in one song and that was a Bad Word

at some point I went to a friends house who had cable AND internet and liked adventure time too - this was probably around 2012-2014. I got back into adventure time through him (at least a little. I still had no way to watch it on my own)

I was always paranoid his grandma would get mad at us for watching adventure time. I kept asking, are you sure she doesn’t care?? the show’s kinda inappropriate, isn’t it?? he assured me she liked adventure time lmao

at one point with my little laptop I was watching AT in my room at home- the episode where Finn tries to get a date to the movies and everybody starts smoochin. my mom walked in and I legit slammed my laptop closed and pretended to be asleep bc I thought I’d get in trouble

to this day my mom probably still thinks she walked in on me watching porn. no. I just thought kissin in kid shows would get me in trouble. I was maybe 11.

a lot of time passed with me not getting to watch adventure time bc I didn’t have a consistent way to watch it, and by the time I did as a mid teen, the show was already REALLY far in, I knew the plot had gotten complicated, and it felt too late to try to get back in

collectively I’d probably seen up through about season 3 or 4. and I saw lots of stuff about it online- I just didn’t get it all. I knew of some plot events, but others I had no idea what was going on. fern perplexed me hardcore. but I always held onto my love for the show

then stakes came out. my love for Marceline re-emerged. I watched the whole thing, unsure of any previous plot developments, and fell back in love with adventure time. I watched some more plot episodes, fawned over the show, and watched the final episode when it came out.

I’d still never seen it chronologically though. so I did that starting last week or so

I wasn’t sure whether to consider it a “rewatch” or not considering the circumstances. I eventually decided against it. more like watching adventure time for the first time with a lot of previous appreciation and knowledge

i just finished the last episode for the second first time and I gotta say. adventure time is really really important. to me and in general

all the stuff about bad father relationships? found family? having adventures and having fun? growing up? all hit me really hard and really personal
