Completed a nice wee stack of reading in January. Some I'd recommend, some I'd let others do that for.

February certainly won't have this long of a book trail... let's blame it on #CyberScotWeek2020. A very happy learning distraction from the #TBR list

This copy of 'I, Rigoberta Menchú' has been around the world with me. It's a tough read, but a necessary one.

A translation of @RigobertMenchu's personal story of the community/family she is from - and the losses experienced in Guatemala's 'civil' war on indigenous peoples.
'Beggars Banquet' by @Beathhigh. Because his writing is quick + sharp... packed with puzzles of the social criminal kind. Not to mention the special feelings of familiarity when his stories mention the streets of this special country that raised me 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

A recommendation from the legend that is my Mother: The Taxidermist's Daughter by @katemosse

It's dark, grim, and dreich (damp and cold) - and highlights underrepresented women's experiences in early 1900s.

Perfect for these stormy winter months. Better than Poe.

Gifted to us at the @creativemorning global summit in 2018, finally completed 'The Art of Gathering' by @priyaparker

A good primer for those that don't naturally design spaces, communities, and events with strong empathy and purpose.

Another recommendation. One that could have backfired, had I not really loved it... right, @ToniWS4?

It's #Neuromancer by @GreatDismal. #Cyberspace, a kickass woman holding no prisoners, and #biotech imagination gone wild. How had I not read this sooner?!?!

#ReadThis #Cyberpunk
And, 'Uncanny Valley', with @annawiener's real experiences working in Silicon Valley.

So many of the situations described feel painfully familiar. I hope more folks in the tech hubs of the world read this + course correct - get out of our bubbles. Let's build inclusively.
February books: 2 hits, and a miss!

All subjective, obvs.

Also obvs: @GreatDismal
& @kimballscott books were definitely not on the 'miss' list.

'Count Zero' by William Gibson ( @GreatDismal) - another braw one. The fine person who set me on his books ( @ToniWS4) will be to blame when my bookshelf busts a #Cyberpunk nut.

#AmReading
'Radical Candor' by @kimballscott 👏🏼

Packed with wee gems, all set in an easy to digest framework (in photos), with realistic examples to fix learning.

Read this one.

And... this one.

Well, let's just say I probably need to work on being able to walk away from a book when I'm not enjoying it. To let it go, and move on.

If reading is a coping mechanism, no one could criticise you for leaning on it a little more in March... at least that's what I'm telling myself 🦉📚

Found retreat in these, and fully plan on retreating into even more during April. Send Recs!

. @Bruces' 'The Hacker Crackdown' - a history of hacker sub-culture, from Operation Sun Devil to the formation of the @EFF "This book is a historic chronicle of the outlaw culture of the electronic frontier."

#AmReading #QuarantineBookClub
'The Dark Forest', 2nd in Liu Cixin's 'Three Body Problem' trilogy, is one hellofa ride I didn't want to step off.

Tackling interstellar + interpersonal complexities, so carefully + creatively, it's hard to judge characters or predict the outcomes at any point.

#AmReading
In 'I'm A Pussy', the essay by Jordan Stephens for @_pound_project, he explores language + the power it has to shape us.

"What makes us witches and wizards, every single day of our mortal existence, is our ability to use words" - @JordanFStephens

#AmReading #QuarantineBookClub
'Friend or Foe' by Galinsky & Schweitzer is about business leadership and communication - w/ research, case studies + examples for readers to negotiate + find productive balance across daily interactions.

Sounds pretty dry, huh? Nope. It was seriously engaging and enlightening!
'Creative Superpowers' by, well... a whole host of interesting folks!

Packed w/ actionable advice for nurturing creativity, thinking outside the box, and letting go of perfectionism (and fears) that hold us back from creating, growing + sharing.
