Pay inequality is a big problem in tech, especially for underrepresented groups like women and minorities. The best way you can help is by sharing yours. I’ll go first.

I get it’s uncomfortable for many to talk about this stuff and it’s not for everyone, but I think it’s important and hope others will join in. Aside from helping inform others of their own worth, it also encourages companies to be more transparent. https://www.nytimes.com/2018/11/18/smarter-living/the-benefits-of-sharing-your-salary.html
I’m pretty happy with my current comp, but it wasn’t always great. People from FAANG companies have much better negotiating grounds. As an L4 at Uber I was paid $115k coming from a startup while former-FAANG colleagues with the same level/experience made $140k+. I didn’t know 🤷‍♂️.
To Uber’s credit, they made a massive salary adjustment for everyone in 2017 to try to course correct this problem. Anyone below the midpoint for their level was moved to the midpoint or 5%. That was a 22% raise for me.

IIRC midpoints were
L4: mid-$140k
L5A: $167k
L5B: $178k?
Location unfortunately is often a factor. I’ve lived in SF or NY my entire professional career. IMO though, if your company pays SF salary anywhere, it should offer it everywhere.
