question for longtime Democrats in the South that lean moderate every time out - why?

systemic and engineered injustice is everywhere, true, but in the South it's had more visibility in American history than anywhere else /1
there's lots of people ritually beaten down by the mechanics of daily life, whether it's from poverty, lack of education opportunity, healthcare struggles, or disabilities and it's tougher in the south because of consistently poor infrastructure
not to mention, the constant struggles of folks that want basic human respect for their country of origin, who they love, who they identify as, or their skin color, and again, it's tougher in the south on all fronts
every few years, folks that are a little (or even much) better off come around to ask for votes from these people, and promises are made that things will be better, but more often than not this doesn't happen
this has gone on for such a long time that people don't believe in it anymore, and they've passed that attitude down to other family members or close friends or peers, and to be honest I can't really blame them for not buying into anything that comes from a southern liberal
there is, as it stands, zero faith from the disenfranchised that southern liberals will fight and struggle for them as much as they struggled to get a vote, and now there's the prospect of 2-3 candidates with literally nothing to sell besides not being Trump
in Bloomberg's case it's even worse because the systemic discrimination from his mayoral term directly descends from southern versions of systemic discrimination, so there really is no difference
all this is to say, you pretty much owe it to your unincorporated area, your small community, your college town, your city to be a radical southern leftist, to be angry, to fight for marginalized people (and not just their votes) every chance you get
and yeah, to vote for leftist candidates on city, county, state, and national levels

cool that we have one running for president, right?
