7 Albums to Know Me: a Thread.
Released when I was 21-22, this album helped me make sense of the friends who had been left behind. 4 yrs removed from HS, I watched friends fall victim to the streets, prison, etc. These 12 tracks helped me understand how easy it is to be led into temptation & find false idols.
This album came into my life at a time where I frequently questioned my actions. Through reflection & maturity, Common got back to his roots & created greatness. Being vulnerable on wax showed me to do the same in my life, which has helped me tremendously.
The 1st CD I memorized lyrics to wasn't good for a 4 yr old, but it shaped me nonetheless. Blaring out of my dad's car & at every family BBQ, The Chronic connected me to my family, especially my dad. Since then, I seek to connect with people through music like I did with this LP.
The first Golden Era LP I bought represented a shift in my life. I bought it after I heard the name repeatedly & fell in love. For the 1st time, I was independent & nerded out on Hip Hop. This purchase showed me to follow my curiosity, I might find something I love.
Found this LP at a time where I wasn't happy w/ Hip Hop (13). Instead I sought aggressive, honest, & political tracks. I didn't realize Hip Hop had these same elements, so it led me to PE, dead prez & a deeper dive into NWA. By leaving Hip Hop, I actually grew to love it more.
This is the single greatest album ever released. At the peak of his fame, Marvin Gaye stepped back & made what some call a conscious album. This LP showed me when you're good at something, you confidently blaze your own path and let people either like it or love it.
I remember my grandpa playing this, but I didn't appreciate it until later. I take this same approach in life: instead of searching for the mysterious new, I'd first deepen my love, appreciation & knowledge for what was in front of me. Value is endless if you look for it.
