This week I’m at a Sexual Assault Response & Prevention class, so get ready for a thread of straight facts that I think you should know.

1866: first woman in the US to break the silence around rape. It wasn’t until the 1970’s that rape crisis centers were established & the 80’s was the beginning of anti-rape edu & est of the protection of victim’s rights, largely due to date rapes being prevalent in the 80’s.

In 1993 ALL 50 STATES made marital rape legal. Today, marital rape is illegal in all 50 states, however there are still states where it is known to be “semi-legal.” States dependent on the laws the details of the offense will vary by state offering many loopholes to the offender

The victim’s SAFE kit can be held for up to 5 years from the date the case was closed. However, this is trying to be changed to 10 yrs. For the military this is the same for UNRESTRICTED reports. RESTRICTED reports and be held for 10 yrs from the date the documentation was signed

The brain initiates “fight, flight, freeze.” This allows the body to produce neurochemicals to enable energy & strength to protect yourself.
“Freezing” also known as “tonic immobility” is less familiar, let a common response.

When victims freeze as a response, they often appear passive, obedient, even friendly. “Freezing,” failing to keep the person from performing an unwanted act is not consent. Freezing is a response in which the victim avoids resisting in order to minimalism injury&assure survival

1 out of 5 MEN & 1 out of 2 WOMEN have experienced sexual violence in their lifetime!!!

An average of 68% of assaults are NOT reported. It is one of the MOST underreported crimes. Only 2 RAPISTS out of 100 RAPES will spend a DAY in prison.

Every 73 seconds, an American is Sexually Assaulted. The number of assaults has fallen by more than half since 1993 — even today, only 5 out of every 1,000 rapists will end up in prison.

Experiencing sexual violence during childhood and adolescence increases the likelihood of experiencing sexual violence as an adult.

Most female victims of completed rape (78.7%) experienced their first rape before the age of 25. 40.4% experienced their first rape before the age of 18.

About 35% of women who were raped as minors also were raped as adults compared to 14% of women without an early rape history.

28% of male victims of completed rapes were first raped when they were 10 years old or younger

There is maximum time limit to receiving a SAFE kit, dependent on the facility it is GENERALLY 3-5 days at a civilian facility or up to 7 days at a military facility. It is preferred for the SAFE kit to be received within the first 3 days.
