It is fantastic to see how much awareness #BHM generates every year. Yet, the ever-present issue of racial justice should not be relegated to 'then' when #BIPOC continue to experience violent racism in the here and 'now' THREAD
Despite being illegal, racial profiling occurs every day, in cities and towns across the country, when those with power target #BIPOC for humiliating and often frightening scrutiny without evidence of wrongdoing. /1
Therefore these names are not just history, they are part of the living present. They are alive every minute of every day.

Even today, most Americans believe:
- blacks are less intelligent
- blacks are lazier than white people
- blacks are more interested in welfare than work
- blacks have 'thicker' skin than whites
/3
Even today, racial disparities in healthcare persist.

Racism is literally destroying, breaking, and ending black and brown lives across the nation.

/4
And what's worse is that many of our efforts to advance racial justice lead us to paradoxically pat ourselves on the back and feel like we've 'moved on' and that #BIPOC should be grateful. This kind of toxic self-congratulatory positivity is even worse than explicit racism. /5
Before we get too complacent or too proud of ourselves we cannot forget that being #antiracist rarely feels comfortable, and #antiracist victories should never lead us to feel like our work is done. /6
There are no boxes we can check, workshops we can take, or #BIPOC we can hire to fix our racism problem.

Change only happens by looking in the mirror, not by pointing our finger. Racism is hardwired in our brains, and embedded in our society. /7
The only real #antiracist is a lifelong #antiracist.

Not one who becomes a temporary #antiracist every February,

or reads a few books,

or tweets a few words.

Keep fighting. Keep striving. Never stop.

Let's make the kind of history our ancestors would be proud of.
