2/ Components of Time Management
Gordon & Borkan’s lit review highlights 4 principles of time management http://tiny.cc/MedEdTime :

1. Set goals
2. Prioritize competing responsibilities
3. Plan & organize activities
4. Minimize wasted time
3/ Set Goals
- Set short- (1-3yr) & long-term (5-10yr) goals for your career
(see http://tiny.cc/MedEdGoals )
- Break long-term ends goals into bite-sized means goals
- Monitor past & current activities for goal compatibility
4/ Prioritize
- Ask: do new opportunities contribute to your goals?
- Ask: do you have to give up something to pursue a new activity?
- Use Covey/Eisenhower Matrix to prioritize tasks. Pay most attention to quadrant 2, NOT 1 or 3 (see http://tiny.cc/TimeMatrix  and below)
5/ Planning & Organizing
- Differentiate tasks by estimated time for completion (see table)
- Break large projects into 30-minute tasks
- Know your optimal times & locations for productivity. Night owl or early riser? Office, home, or café?
6/ Planning & Organizing
- Plan a weekly & monthly schedule
- Schedule non-negotiable “writing / planning” time
- Take advantage of “uninterruptible” time (ie train rides)
7/ Planning & Organizing
Use technology! After chief year, I got used to neurotically color-coding activities on Google Calendar & now share calendars with my husband, a GI fellow with lots of overnight call, so we never accidentally double-book ourselves. Ex below
8/ Planning & Organizing
Keep track of the big picture! Like Idea Boards? I use virtual stickie notes that are collaboration & app-friendly, as well as filterable with Google Keep. Ex below
9/ Minimize Waste
Table 3 of the article describes 10 time wasters & solutions. Examples:
- Schedule time where email, social media, and phones are turned off
- Delegate tasks that can be done by others
- Dispose of unwanted messages and work towards Inbox of “zero”
10/ #Medtwitter, which of the 4 principles of time management in #MedEd will you try more of in 2020? Do you have additional strategies? Comment below!
