1. Yesterday a friend said 'not all Leavers are racists'. I was born here, consider myself British rather than anything else but have a brown face and Brexit has upset me a great deal. Here's what I said... https://twitter.com/ajcrompton1/status/1223572158418432001
2. I dont think every leave voter was racist. But those who had other reasons (eg my Dad still bangs on about Greece) were the more educated ones. They should have known that the underlying appeal (and a lot of the narrative at the time) was directed at the fear of 'the other'.
3. If they lived through the 70s and 80s they knew 1st hand the forces that simmer in England and that would now be unleashed. They might not be Racists but they have enabled Racism.
4. My heart genuinely hurts with the fear that innocent brown faces/non english speakers/tourists will be injured or killed. And that my children now live in a land where calling someone a Paki is commonplace. It happened to me and shouldn't be happening in 2020.
5. So no. Not all Leavers are racist but deep down they knew what they voted for. In this respect much more than the blasted trade and political outcomes.
6. So if fate gave you a white face, PLEASE stand shoulder-to-shoulder with 'the others'. Be kind, make friends and let's keep eachother safe #NotMyBrexit
7. PS. I ❤ the Twitter echo chamber I inhabit. It gives me great hope. #Resist
8. PPS. My relationship with my Dad needs some healing. In our childhood we lived in Europe for a few years, we bought a house in Spain. He and my mum were Immigrants. The hypocrisy makes me mad but I have also to be kind. Wish me luck.
9. And here you go. Full bloody circle.
