the #SuperBowl has reignited controversy around Native mascots. proponents of @NFL team names like the @Chiefs & @Redskins claim the terms are intended to honor, & are used respectfully.

i found over 170,000 tweets showing the opposite.

. @NFL claims terms like 'r*dskins' & 'chiefs' are no longer used offensively. i tested 26 negative/offensive terms & found over 120k instances of these being used in tweets about the @Chiefs & @49ers -- the other #SuperBowl 2020 team.

which team led in hate speech?
CN: anti-Native racism

if you guessed the @Chiefs had by far the most negative/hate speech, for almost every hateful or offensive term tested, you'd be correct. despite both these teams place in the #SuperBowl, the vast majority of hate speech is associated with the Chiefs.
CN: anti-Native racism

could some part of *some* of the tested terms, like "killed", be dismissed as football "trash talk"?

absolutely.

however it's harder to dismiss words like "Injun", which appears over 120 times w tweets referencing the @Chiefs and almost never w @49ers
CN: anti-Native racism

"Firewater", which appears over 300 times with tweets referencing the @Chiefs (and almost never with the 49ers) is not typical @NFL trash talk.

it is Native-specific hate speech.
CN: anti-Native racism

it is difficult to imagine a scenario where "smallpox" and "scalp", appearing 170 & 600+ times respectively, would be used in @NFL discourse outside of teams with Native mascots. in fact, their absence from @49ers tweets demonstrates they're not.
CN: anti-Native racism

tweets with especially disturbing & violent imagery associated with the @Chiefs take on an even more sinister tone when linked with anti-Native racism & read in light of the epidemic of missing & murdered Indigenous womxn #MMIW

see "raped" & "exterminate"
the data is in. Native mascots are provably correlated with increased hate speech against Natives.

with the over 5700 missing & murdered Indigenous womxn & girls, will the @NFL & teams like @Chiefs & @Redskins listen to the organizations like @APA and finally #ChangeTheName?
. @NFL y'all don't have to take my word for it: i encourage you to run the code for yourselves.

i've provided all data & all my code free of charge, for anyone to use in this repo: https://github.com/IndigenousEngineering/Not_Your_Mascot

this includes a corpus of nearly 200,000 labeled tweets.

Statement by the American Psychological Association on Native mascots:

"In 2005, the APA called for the immediate retirement of all American Indian mascots...APA's position is based on a growing body of social science literature that shows the harmful effects...
...of racial stereotyping and inaccurate racial portrayals, including the particularly harmful effects of American Indian sports mascots on the social identity development and self-esteem of American Indian young people." https://www.apa.org/pi/oema/resources/indian-mascots
Native mascots aren't just bad for Indigenous people, they hurt everybody:

"Studies show that regardless of their intention, these mascots do not honor American Indians, but instead bring to mind negative thoughts associated with them as a group of people....
from the National Congress of American Indians:

"As documented in a comprehensive review of decades of social science research, derogatory 'Indian' sports mascots have serious psychological, social and cultural consequences for Native Americans, especially Native youth...
..Most concerning...are the alarmingly high rates of hate crimes against Native people...These factors together indicate a very real need to take immediate action...to diffuse additional hateful activity against Native peoples"

regarding violence against Natives:

“American Indians are more likely than people of other races to experience violence at the hands of someone of a different race.”
