In 1970, photographer Chris Morphet (pictured below) travelled to the Shetland Isles to document the Fair Isle industry.
Here are some of those images.
The start of the production line...
Fair Isle knitting originated on the remote island of Fair Isle, which lies midway between the Orkney and Shetland.
The traditional knitwear of Fair Isle and its intricate skill have been practised continuously for generations upon generations.
Tea cosys and gloves.
And here's some we made earlier...
A close up of some of the intricate patterns.
Three Fishermen on the deck of their boat 'Planet' in the harbour of the Shetland Isle of Whalsay.
Crosses and lozenge shaped hexagons containing symbols, sometimes of a religious nature usually formed the basic OXO pattern.
This kid's earned his stripe.
The Fair Isle Post Office and telephone box.
This guy deserves a solo slot...
And lastly, the wee man.
Gonna finish this thread off with this article in which Chris discusses this assignment. There are even a couple of 'then and now' images including this one of Chris himself.
