I'm a big fan of retro appliances. Some of them are very cool, and I can see why this tweet has been such a hit. My old house also had some ancient fans.

But unfortunately, old appliances do pose a cost on energy systems and contribute to emissions. Here's a #thread. https://twitter.com/surekhapillai/status/1222026487013888001
Owing to a strong push for energy efficiency by governments and some appliance makers, we have vastly more efficient appliances today.

These efficiency improvements have not only led to lower energy use, but as a result, also have lowered greenhouse gas emissions.
For example, refrigerators use 75% less energy today than they did in 1970. And 40% less today than they did in 2000.

Similarly, efficient washing machines today use 25% less energy than standard ones in the market. They too have become more efficient over time.
Air-conditioners are the big ones. Efficient ACs today are 30% more efficient than the average ones in the market. Transitioning to energy-efficient ACs in 150 countries could save 620 TWh of electricity and 480 Mt of CO2 annually in 2030.
