Our opaque political party finance activity is the biggest single problem in Nigeria today. It is why the Police is the way it is and why an NURTW became a powerful shadow government. Power and control comes from corruption and extortion at the bottom. It is aggregated.
Babangida tried to solve this early with SDP and NRC by building structures for the parties and ensuring strict compliance as well as transparency. The outcome was MKO Abiola winning three freeest and fairest elections in Nigerian history. We know how that was scuttled eventually
Nigeria is not honest about Nigeria. The current so called strong center is held together by compromise and turning w blind eye to pillage and corruption. I think the fear of restructuring and regional fragmentation will lead to something much worse, micro fragmentation.
The current violence all over the country are not just random turf wars, they follow a pattern. I watched a video yesterday showing that herdsmen have taken over farms in my my mother’s village at the border of Edo and Delta. If Amotekun doesn’t happen, it will be a free for all.
The center is not honest because it is afraid of the consequence of admitting that it has lost control and it is now being controlled by factions.
The only thing the center has are the armed forces. The armed forces need to be funded and the center is poor. Catch 22 situation. Center now relies on alliances to maintain control and it thinks one of those alliances is going rogue when they are just trying to survive.
I believe they will see any parallel security organization as a coup against the tenuous compromise and fragile alliance currently in place and will try to squash it. They may not succeed and will end up in further compromise. This will lead to copycats all around. The main fear.
We have never had a democracy but a feudal system. If you want to see what is going to happen to Nigeria, look to Europe and England. The way out is the most unpleasant.
