gamergate happened because a group of mostly middle-class white dudes built an identity around 'geek culture' and didn't like feeling their hobbies were infiltrated by women/PoC/The Gays. it was the result of a culture that told people they could find identities via consumption.
these were people who did not feel they had a model for self-identity outside of that, so when suddenly these other groups showed up and started talking about their problems, even started insisting things change to account for them, it was like an entire culture was being erased
this is the same mechanism that allows the same groups to be led into ultranationalism and distorted views of masculinity. it's a way to find an identity, which is an incredibly powerful thing.

and, uh, in case this isn't obvious enough from my whole thing, I think being upset because there's more marginalized people showing up in your communities is silly and childish - but at the end of the day, we all know plenty of people can arrive at beliefs for childish reasons.
also gonna steal the meme arrow joke so you guys can't do it

>year of our lord 2010+10
>still talking about gamergate
