I was living in China during the SARS times of 2002-3 and due to that experience am less worried about Coronavirus than the media would like me to be. IMHO fears are exaggerated and a lot of that exaggeration is down to the Chinese themselves. Specifically: old Chinese women.
Now, it’s a known fact that old Chinese women don’t have souls. Lacking souls these hardened old bitches cling to life with a firm hand knowing that once death snuffs out their mortal frame there is no afterlife for them to journey onto. Hence, they become obsessed with health.
(Some Chinese women are born with something resembling a soul, but years of intense social competition and ruthless selfishness eventually extinguishes what may have existed. Once the hair of a Chinese woman turns frizzy the soul is completely gone already.)
Old Chinese women are obsessed with living forever. They berate their sons to earn ever more money so that they can be kept in a near-constant supply of ginseng, cordyceps and bird’s nest soup. Entire species must be decimated so that all old Chinese women can live to 110.
Now when something comes along which threatens the immortality of an old Chinese woman it sets off her brutal survival instinct like a wounded animal protecting its offspring. An inevitable chain of events then proceeds to take place.
The old Chinese woman must procure enough supplies to keep her through the danger period. She will seek out gigantic sacks of rice, gallons of cooking oil and rivers of soy sauce for her to horde like a wrinkled diseased dragon.
It is important to remember that it isn’t enough for the old Chinese woman to succeed - others must fail before her cold soulless heart is truly satisfied. She will seek out arenas of combat (supermarkets, stores, Walmart) where she can fight for what is rightfully hers.
Upon entering these arenas, the old Chinese woman will inevitably encounter other old Chinese women. What then ensues is a bitter spiral of vicious combat where the battleaxes will attack, bite, scratch and gouge one another for just one grain of rice more than their rivals.
Her supplies intact, the old Chinese woman must then carry her spoils home. This will mean barging her way onto public transport and not giving a shit about anyone else whatsoever. When you’re a Chinese centenarian every minute counts as you could literally die at any moment.
At home the old Chinese woman will then proceed to make sure her offspring are protected so that her lineage continues in the unlikely event of her death. Chinese babies must be wrapped and shielded from all the ills of the world and treated like precious centers of the universe.
Any slight cough or sniffle in the child must be treated with complete hysteria and prolonged bouts of weeping and screaming so that everyone else in the vicinity is forced to listen to you. Old Chinese women want attention and Oscar winners ain’t got nothing on them.
At all times remember that others must suffer and fail to make one’s own victory all the greater. This means throwing out one’s contaminated trash into the space of others and flinging the infected faeces of grandchildren onto the paths of the general public.
The book Party Members (which I heartily recommend as a gruesome satire on China) has some solid descriptions of old Chinese women and their behaviour.

As the book says, being an old Chinese woman of 110 places you closer to God in the large scheme of things (even though they don’t have souls) so you are the most important person in the world. Therefore, the whole world must know of your panic and fear.
The hysteria and fear of death of the old Chinese woman reaches epic proportions until it envelops everything around them. Broadcasts must focus on them, commerce must bow down to their every wish, society itself must come to a stop to placate her screaming and raving.
Most of the scenes of panic coming from Asia will be old Chinese women doing what they do best: being insufferable nags. And these scenes are created primarily for other old Chinese women so that they can revel in others’ misfortune and tell themselves they are right as always.
So remember, while it of course pays to be vigilant against disease, also remember not to get too carried away by the magnified hysteria of clucking old Chinese women who are mortally afraid of returning to Hell.
