TV ratings are trying to keep up with changes in viewer behavior. Companies try count as many views as possible to get who is watching and how; but, they are definitely not counting every view. The point of this thread is to help make sure your view gets counted! (2/10)
Network TV still runs on an ad system where eyeballs mean money. Data collecting companies like Nielsen provide info about viewer behavior to networks. They use this info to choose what to put on air and prove that their network is the best place for any given commercial (3/10)
Nielsen has historically collected this data by putting TV boxes in homes across the country to use a sample to predict viewership. This is the same way that polling is done. No this isn't 100% accurate. Yes it is very frustrating to all including networks and advertisers. (4/10)
As TV and how TV is viewed has changed, they've added other methods of collecting info in order to improve accuracy. If you don't have a Nielsen box, your views still get counted if you watch in other ways, but they don't combine those ratings until later. (5/10)
Later?? What doeS THAT MEAN? WELL LEMME TELL YOU. Nielsen divides their data into 4 categories: Live+same day, +3s, +7s, and anything after. They collect data from the night something is aired, then add that to how many people have seen it after 3, 7, and more days. (6/10)
To complicate it further, they basically can give any network any information they want about the breakdown of viewers. Including age, ethnicity, gender, and even down to the minute of when they decided to start or stop watching a program. Why yes, big brother IS watching. (7/10)
So what does this mean you should do if you don't have a box??
1! remember that social media matters. Networks track tags, negative/positive feelings, and even specific tweets. Tweets with less than 50 likes end up on social reports. Again yes, big brother is watching. (8/10)

2! Watch on platforms that get counted same day as much as possible: the network specific apps (like ABC, CBS or CW), Hulu Live, YouTube TV, ATT Now etc.
3! Watch on these same platforms and regular Hulu the next day too, they will count for +3s, and after that for +7s. (9/10)
