This is probably going to be a long one but hear me out.

A lot of the time when talking about #scottishindependence, there is usually at least one person who brings up the Darien Scheme. Mainly because ‘Scotland went bankrupt & needed saving we became the U.K.’ (1/6)
What these same people don’t realise is that it isn’t as simple as that. In 1701, the English government passed the Act of Settlement so only Protestants could inherit the English crown, settling on Sophia of Hanover... (2/6)
In 1704, Scotland passed the Act of Security making it clear that they were going to pick their own monarch & would only accept England’s choice if they met certain requirements. You know what this would have meant? Two different monarchs in Britain again. (3/6)
In 1705, England responded with the Alien Act. Scots were treated as foreign nationals in England. There were sanctions on Scottish trade with the colonies etc. There was a clause that said the Act would be repealed if Scotland entered into a union. (4/6)
Two years later, the Act of Union was passed, riots broke out in Scotland because the people were furious, & it was said ‘for every Scot in favour, there is 99 against’. But on the plus side, the Alien Act was repealed... (5/6)
So, a country in a difficult financial situation was crippled further on purpose so that it would be forced to join a union with the country crippling it.

And all because Scotland wanted to choose its own future. (6/6) #Scotland #ScottishHistory #independence
