How to Comment and Why It& #39;s Important — a thread
I made a poll a while ago asking "So if you wrote a fic and posted it on AO3 or drew a piece and posted it on deviantArt, would u want your audience to rate it (ex.: 7/10), especially when you didn& #39;t ask for their critic?": https://twitter.com/aegyeosang/status/1198110339671441408?s=19">https://twitter.com/aegyeosan...
The reason I asked is cause I noticed I had a reader who, yes, RATED my stories. I didn& #39;t ask for it. & I wanted to know if other people would feel the same way if getting a type of reader like this. The poll got over 100 votes & the majourity said that they wouldn& #39;t want that.
Based off of that, I decided to create a thread on how you SHOULD and SHOULDN& #39;T comment it + why you SHOULD comment more often.
If you& #39;re wondering, "How do you rate a fic?," here& #39;s a direct example—straight off one of own my fic. (I am their very first bookmark.)
Not only does this person RATE my fic, but they also DON& #39;T give any constructive criticism and they comment in their BOOKMARKS, so there& #39;s no way for me to even respond. Quite cowardly, imho.
Here are some examples from friends of mine who have received the SAME exact & #39;bookmarker& #39; on their fic:
𝗥𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝘄𝗵𝘆 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗜𝗦𝗡& #39;𝗧 𝗼𝗸𝗮𝘆:

• It& #39;s condescending!!!!!!
• There& #39;s no constructive feedback!?
• Disingenuous because it reduces a lot of hard work to a NUMBER
• They??? Don& #39;t even write????????
• Causes the authour to feel like SHIT
𝗔𝗻𝗱 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗼𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝘄𝗵𝗼 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗯𝗲𝗲𝗻 𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗲𝗻𝗱 𝗼𝗳 𝗶𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗱𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗶𝘀𝗲 𝗶𝘁 𝗮𝘀 𝗺𝘂𝗰𝗵 𝗮𝘀 𝗜 𝗱𝗼:
𝗔𝗻𝗱 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗼𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝗳𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗱𝘀:
Whoever you are out there, I& #39;m callin you out and, yeah, you SHOULD be ashamed. You are NOT a Rotten-Tomatoes™ critic. My fic is NOT a movie. My time spent on this HASN& #39;T been paid for. Seriously, who the fuck is this??? Cause step the fuck up, Kyle. I got some mf words for ya.
Moving on!!!
𝗬𝗼𝘂 𝗦𝗛𝗢𝗨𝗟𝗗𝗡& #39;𝗧 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗹𝗶𝗸𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀:
Or this (and thank you to @Elesteria for defending the hell out of this authour cause I woulda been way less nicer than this):
𝗢𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗦𝗛𝗢𝗨𝗟𝗗𝗡& #39;𝗧 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁:

• Comment but it& #39;s just you beta-ing the person& #39;s work
• Asking for someone to add tags to their work to accommodate to your needs (such as filtering *rolls eyes*)
• "Update please"

• "Blank is too OOC"
• "I don& #39;t like how blank acted in this fic"
• “Could have used less detail”
• "Blank shouldn& #39;t be the top/bottom/dom/sub, blank should"
• "Blank wouldn& #39;t act like that, they& #39;re supposed to be demure, etc."
• "This fic would be so great if it were blank ship instead"
Here& #39;s how you CAN comment!!

𝗘𝘅𝗮𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗺𝗲:
𝗘𝘅𝗮𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝗜& #39;𝘃𝗲 𝗴𝗼𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗻:
𝗘𝘅𝗮𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝗺𝘆 𝗳𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗱𝘀 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗲𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗱:
𝗔𝗻𝗱 𝗼𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀 𝗹𝗶𝗸𝗲:

• "Can& #39;t wait for the next update"
• How the fic made you feel (positively)
• "I felt your passion in writing this"
• "Your word flow is amazing"
• "YOUR GALAXY MIND"
• Tell them how you& #39;re so speechless
• Keyboard smash is cool too
• Throw in a meme (or a vine reference if ya feelin funky)
Even jump into the authour& #39;s Twitter DM (direct message) or CC inbox (curiouscat)!! Here are some examples I& #39;ve received from both:
Here are some funny comments I& #39;ve gotten before:
And here& #39;s a couple funny ones that I& #39;ve given before:
Moving onto how you should react to fanart (and art in general)!!
Just like fanfiction, fanart is a completely free service done!! We aren& #39;t paid to do this!!! We spend our quality time doing these things. So like someone wisely said before, "Shut up and eat your free content."
𝗧𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀 𝗡𝗢𝗧 𝘁𝗼 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗼𝗻 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲& #39;𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝘁:

• Unless asked for it: any type of criticism
• "Don& #39;t ship it, but I like it"
• "Wish I could draw like this"
• "https://abs.twimg.com/emoji/v2/... draggable="false" alt="💖" title="Sparkling heart" aria-label="Emoji: Sparkling heart">https://abs.twimg.com/emoji/v2/... draggable="false" alt="💖" title="Sparkling heart" aria-label="Emoji: Sparkling heart">https://abs.twimg.com/emoji/v2/... draggable="false" alt="💕" title="Two hearts" aria-label="Emoji: Two hearts">https://abs.twimg.com/emoji/v2/... draggable="false" alt="💖" title="Sparkling heart" aria-label="Emoji: Sparkling heart">https://abs.twimg.com/emoji/v2/... draggable="false" alt="🥰" title="Smiling face with 3 hearts" aria-label="Emoji: Smiling face with 3 hearts">https://abs.twimg.com/emoji/v2/... draggable="false" alt="💖" title="Sparkling heart" aria-label="Emoji: Sparkling heart">https://abs.twimg.com/emoji/v2/... draggable="false" alt="🥰" title="Smiling face with 3 hearts" aria-label="Emoji: Smiling face with 3 hearts">https://abs.twimg.com/emoji/v2/... draggable="false" alt="💖" title="Sparkling heart" aria-label="Emoji: Sparkling heart">https://abs.twimg.com/emoji/v2/... draggable="false" alt="💕" title="Two hearts" aria-label="Emoji: Two hearts">https://abs.twimg.com/emoji/v2/... draggable="false" alt="💖" title="Sparkling heart" aria-label="Emoji: Sparkling heart">https://abs.twimg.com/emoji/v2/... draggable="false" alt="💕" title="Two hearts" aria-label="Emoji: Two hearts">https://abs.twimg.com/emoji/v2/... draggable="false" alt="💖" title="Sparkling heart" aria-label="Emoji: Sparkling heart">https://abs.twimg.com/emoji/v2/... draggable="false" alt="💕" title="Two hearts" aria-label="Emoji: Two hearts">https://abs.twimg.com/emoji/v2/... draggable="false" alt="🥰" title="Smiling face with 3 hearts" aria-label="Emoji: Smiling face with 3 hearts">”
• "Would& #39;ve been better as so-and-so"
• Self-promotion
• "Looks like so-and-so"
• Taking the fanart too seriously
• Literally commenting that "it& #39;s bad"
• Ask abt reposting
• About the views/likes/rts/followers the artist has
𝗧𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗖𝗔𝗡 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗼𝗻 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲& #39;𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝘁:

• How it made you feel (positively)
• "This is beautiful"
• "You& #39;re very talented"
• "I STARTED SOBBING WTF THIS IS AMAZING"
• Memes are ALWAYS a sick way to express without using words
And even:
And with this, I hope y& #39;all can learn to use your words better! Watch your tones! Put yourself in the content creator& #39;s position and think abt what you would like to hear if you created that awesome piece you just read or viewed!
It& #39;s important to leave comments because it encourages us to do more and to do BETTER. And you never know how your words can leave an impact on someone!!
I am an avid commenter and I take pride in taking my time to comment on people& #39;s fic because I know how much in means to authours.
I retweet/reblog/link people& #39;s art posts all the time because they deserve recognition!! I enjoy praising people for their ability and talent for writing and drawing.
People enjoy spending their free time to write this free content because it& #39;s one of their hobbies and because the fandom(s) we write/draw for deserve this kind of content.
When you don& #39;t leave positive feedback, it& #39;s difficult for us to feel like we& #39;re contributing to the fandom in ways that others can& #39;t and like our hard work means nothing.
So, please, I am begging: COMMENT.

Even if it& #39;s just ONE SENTENCE. Make someone& #39;s day/evening/night. Being kind costs ABSOLUTELY NOTHING.
