1) Can we stop with sort of thing already? Stop ascribing behaviour we find repellant and harmful to mental illness. Someone can be narcissistic - even an arrogant & harmful asshole - and not have Narcissistic PD. Personality disorders are stigmatised enough without adding to it. https://twitter.com/duty2warn/status/1217874388285935616
2) That this is being done by mental health professionals is unethical and toxic in so many ways.
It stigmatises people with mental health problems. Having a mental health problem doesn't make someone bad or unfit to do a job.
4) Mental health professionals like @duty2warn using mental health terms to label and attack someone also has every chance of deterring people who need help from seeking it. Imagine someone who likes Trump - and there are many such people - and is struggling with something...
5) ...and they see mental health professionals attacking and labelling Trump in mental health terms. Will they seek needed help from a therapist, or think "Those therapists will call me crazy and judge me" and avoid getting help?
6) Diagnosing/commenting on the mental health/state of mind of anyone identifiable is just unethical behaviour for MH professionals. It would also make me, if I were a patient of theirs, doubt whether they'd respect my confidentiality. So would harm the therapeutic relationship.
7) As well as THAT, this "Trump has diagnosis X" bullshit is even stupid politically. During or after the 2020 campaign expect hacks from somewhere like @AAPSonline to very somberly say "In our professional opinion, President Elizabeth Warren is [diagnosis Y]"...
8) ...and if we haven't clearly said "This is unethical nonsense bullshit" with Trump then we won't have grounds to call *that* the unethical nonsense bullshit it is.
9) Hate Trump - fine. So do I. But instead of fundraising to make a film with a harmful and unethical premise maybe that money would do something useful if it was put into voter registration in a swing state. https://twitter.com/duty2warn/status/1217899911925993473
10) Rantstream ends. And yes, I am a mental health service user myself, so this does feel like it personally matters.
